help with the score?

this is the deer I killed with my bow last year. It was the 1st deer I ever had scored and was kind of surprised it only went 132 with 2" of deductions. Since then Ive been told severel times that I should get someone else to measure it over. I didnt think much about it until I talked to a friend who shot a similar buck last year. His buck also had 8 points , was about the same width but not quite as tall , and the main beems were a bit shorter than mine. He said his scored 138 with deductions. Now that got me curious if its worth getting a 2nd opinion on mine. I was wondering what some of you guys think, the g2s are 11 1/4 ", the g3s are 9 1/2 ". The inside spread is about 15 1/2 . heres a pic of the mount. I know, I should just get a book or something and learn to do this on my own , any suggestions on a book or something I could get would be apreciated as well. thanks

Brad:

Although I'm not a certified B&C measurer yet, I do measure for the Nebraska Big Game Records program. Looking at the photo you posted, I'd guess that you aren't too far off at 132". Although the deer has good tine length, it's a basic 4x4 with with a narrow inside spread.

Both Boone & Crockett and Pope & Young offer scoring manuals for sale through their websites. Anyone can order these. The best way to learn is to get in touch with an offical scorer and spend some some assisting them with measuring. There's no substitute for that kind of hands-on experience.

If there's one thing that I want to emphasize, it's for hunters not to get too hung up about the score. On numerous occasions I've sat across the scoring table from guys that were grinning from ear to ear when they walked in with their trophy. And often when they hear the final score, their expression is different. What changed? It certainly wasn't the buck! A trophy is a trophy regardless of the score, so don't place undue emphasis on a number. Enjoy your buck and the memories of the hunt. After all, no scoring system ever devised can measure the true signficance of a successful hunt.

thanks for the link, I taped him twice and came up with a little over 144 the 1st time and a little under 144 the 2nd. Im sure Im not real exact but if you subtracted the inside spread credit, its pretty close to what the last guy taped it at so who knows. Thanks Nebraska, Im not real concerned with the score be it 132 or 150, Id just like to be a good judge of sizing deer on the hoof, and the best way to do that for me is to compare them to other deer I see on my wall every day.I just got curious when I was seeing all these deer pictures and hearing the scores and they often seemed a little high to me , anyway, that was kind of fun, I think Ill start taping some of the other bucks Ive got mounted and see if I can get a rough idea where they are at

By looking at the picture I would guess it's much closer to 144 than 132. You should have the score sheet, make sure he added right and included the inside spread.

Greendeem, I would look at the sheet if I had one. The guy who scored it was a brother of a friend and had just learned how to do it himself, so the only sheet was a piece of notebook paper

Bring him to the Classic in DSM in March and I'll measure it for you. If you have questions I'll have you sit in while I measure it. Looks to me that it's more than 132.

I think you are alot closer at the 144 I have one that looks just about like that and he was 146. Great looking trophy congrats!

Great buck, killed one last year in Iowa that appears to be the twin of yours. An experienced scorer totaled it at 139 7/8 gross. Your buck has a little more bone so I'd bet 144 is real close. Good Hunting!

That sums it up !
My first buck with a bow is a small typical 8pt that I had mounted and display proudly. He couldn't hold a candle to many of the monsters I see harvested on this site, but that doesn't lessen him or my memories of that hunt in my eyes.

Just score it yourself, it should get you very close. All you need is a scoresheet(you can print one off on P&Y or B&C websites), some string or thin wire, masking tape, and a tape measure. It's kind of fun doing yourself anyway, plus it helps in doing ballpark scores out in the woods.

Bradsbuck,
I would say that the scorer made an error recording the measurements on his score sheet or while adding. The buck seems to be off by 10". If you grossed the buck at 144" and after 2" of deductions it should score 142". My 2cents! Oh yea, nice buck
