Hevi-shot users?

I know it comes down to finding the load that patterns best in your gun but just wondered how many of you have tried or used Remington hevi-shot?
I was going to try a few new loads this weekend to see if anything patterned better for me than Winchester #5 turkey mags but was a little shocked at the price of Hevi-shot and wondered if it was worth the extra $$$.

It is spendy and worth all of it. Penetration is unbelivable and patterns excellent. 50 yard turkey pattern test with a witness, 108 pellets in the bird target. You decide!

I would like to use the hevi-shot in my ML shotgun this spring.

Are there any hunters on this site that use a ML shotgun for turkeys? And if so is anyone interested in splitting the cost of a bag of hevi-shot?

Or better yet several of us going in on a bag of it together?

All the information that I can find (2 sources) says a 10 lb. bag cost nearly $100.

Does anyone else have a source that you can purchase it through at a better price?

the stuff is amazing, that is all I can say. I've never shot a shell that shoots as hard and patterns as well as that stuff. I would definitely try it out, it patterns awesome out of my 3.5 inch 870

Last year I shot and missed at about 35 yds. For some reason the tom didn't move. When I tried to pump in a new shell I short stroked it. When he saw me trying to yank the spent shell out of the chamber he started to run. needless to say by the time I got the spent shell out and a new round in he was out there a ways but I was caught up in the moment and shot him in the back of the head while he was running away. Dropped him in his tracks. As I sat there looking at him I thought it looked like a long ways. I counted my steps as I went to get the bird....65 paces. The bird wasn't expired yet but he wasn't going anywhere. I'm not saying to shoot Hevi-shot to extend your range, (I probably shouldn't have taken the shot), but I don't think Winchester 5's would have hit hard enough to take him down at 65 paces. I love the stuff. Just my opinion. Hopefully I won't need it this year. Gonna try taking a couple with a bow.

I short stroked it.

Sounds like a personal problem, that might be tough to get a hand on.

After checking out the web site and listening to everyone here ('cept Riverbottom

) I'm definitely going to run a few through the 870 and see what happens. I'm not looking to take any longer shots, but figure it sure doesn't hurt to put a few more pellets in the kill zone!

I'll see if I can post a photo of the target when I'm done.

I have used it and the pattern was incredible. Don't worry about size of the shot, since the stuff is like welding slag and none of it is consistent in size. I had to cut one open to verify it and I was suprised that it shot as good as it did considering that some of the pellets are stuck together. I shot them in a 870 3 1/2" with the factory choke and it was very deadly out past 50yds.

I see where Winchester came out with a new heavier load, the Xtended Range Hi-Density turkey loads.I wonder how these would compare to the Hevi-Shot?I've always been a Winchester fan,and would like to give them a try sometime, but have several boxes of Winchester H.V.'s to use up first.Has anyone tried the new Xtended yet?

Does the Hevi-shot require a special choke? I thought I read where you should NOT use some of the super-full & extra SF chokes with the tighter constrictions.

I've bowhunted for several years now and just haven't kept myself up to date with shotgun loads/chokes. Checking things out for my dad as the Hevi-shot sounds like the way to go

. He is currently using a Undertaker choke on his Benelli Montefeltro (12 ga. 2 3/4" & 3"). Wondering if this choke would work or if there is a better choice out there.

I've heard that also two beards, I don't know if it is more of a scare or not. I use the undertaker turkey choke, and have shot plenty of rounds of hevi shot through it, and I haven't noticed anything bad happen with my choke or gun. so I think your dad will be fine

Hope this helps....there's alot of technical info and test data on hevishot.com that is not on remington.com

Can I use my current Remington shotgun/choke with new Hevi-Shot Turkey Loads?
Yes. Remington has extensively tested Hevi-Shot through various Rem-Chokes. The top-selling choke, diameter and resulting Hevi-Shot pattern percentages are as follows:

Ventilator (.655") 87% 30" circle, 40 yards
Full - Lead Only (.691") 88% "
Full - Lead or Steel (.691") 88% "
Turkey Extra Full (.687") 92% "
Turkey Super Full (.665") 93% "
NEW Hevi-Shot (.675") 94% "

Tighter chokes than .665" do not improve pattern percentages to any extent and in fact begin to produce more open patterns.

Hevi-Shot can produce cosmetic rub marks in barrels and chokes, simply a change in surface finish. Over an equal number of rounds, this rubbing is similar to that experienced with steel shot. Both materials create more choke strain than lead shot due to a more solid payload. With the Remington wad column, the Hevi-Shot pellets rest on a cushioned pad in the shot container that allows the pellets to flow better through the choke. In addition, the Remington Hevi-Shot shot container is much thicker than previous Hevi-Shot loaded rounds and that thickness minimizes pellet contact with the barrel or choke.

Under laboratory test conditions, Remington has fired in excess of 500 rounds through each Remington choke tube offered, including Ventilator (.655") and "lead only" full (.691") without any dimensional changes being encountered. With the limited number of rounds used in normal Turkey hunting, Remington's testing represents many lifetimes of reasonable gun use.

Wow,

So this looks to be some pretty good stuff. Especially if ya got one run'n towards the next county ehh Tom?

Or maybe across the fence.

I wonder if it would reach your front door from my back yard.

I am just adding to what has been already said. I really like the stuff and use my full choke that came with my 870. I would have a hard time to switch from this ammo

Tried it through several tubes in my Winchester Super X2- tried 3&1/2" both 5 & 6 shot- never patterned as well as Winchester high vel 5's. I've shot it up between patterning and birds- have one shell left. Considering that the last 4 birds I have taken have been at 9, 12, 16, & 17 yards I could have been shooting trap loads.

I had been reading up on turkey loads and chokes. I just about decided that my 2 3/4 Remington 1100 wasn't capable of killing a turkey. I thought it might just bounce off, even though this machine has dispatched hundreds of pheasants, thousands of quail, foxes, coons, crows and many deer (with slugs). I guess if I can call one in close enough I could club it with the stock.
