Hey Mickey......

……you’re so fine, you’re so fine you blow my mind! Yah Mickey! Hey Mickey!

Just had to get that outta the way.

I skimmed all the posts from yesterday. I guess I miss a day and I miss a lot. I’m gonna “cherry pick” what I want to reply to from your posts.

After I read them all the first question that came to mind is what is your end game in this? Anybody with the highest common denominator (Ph.D.) should realize poking the hornets nest is gonna cause them to react, in a perfectly natural attempt to protect their nest. In this case, it is hunting rights. Just makes we wonder what you are up too. I’m not convinced it is Mickey Hellickson Ph.D. and not somebody else who is posting. I bet it is some plot by the IBA membership committee to create more members.

“Bow hunters are selfish”. I see that one for what it is, a feeble attempt to divide and conquer.

“Selling you crop”. I’m sure there are times when the farm economy is bad enough some folks are forced to sell the crop that doesn’t really belong to them. The land does, but not the crop you mention. You mention this is and has been a common practice in the south for a number of years. I believe you used 4 decades as the term. I believe it is quite a bit longer. Probably started with the carpet baggers and continued through the years. I don’t have any stats or insight on this, but I wouldn’t doubt it. Sorta goes along with the “share cropper” mentality. As far as Texas, and again, I can’t back up my argument with facts and figures, but I know that and admit it right up front, but when I think of Texas I think of “wildcatters” who would speculate on land for oil. They went “bust” and had to make some money somehow on land that couldn’t be cropped and was only good for jack rabbits deer and brush wolves (Texas talk for coyote). There in starting the “pay to hunt” industry in Texas. Again, I can’t back it up with facts and figures, but it figures.

In Iowa, I think the vast majority of farmers believed in sharing nature’s bounty with anybody that asked. I use the past tense because unfortunately the feeling has changed right along with the rest of society. We now live in an “Its all about me” society. The lowest common denominator, to me, isn’t the hunter who can barely afford the sport, rather it is the slobs, rich or poor, who leave their trash behind, the gates open, deep ruts in the field and bullet holes in signs. How do we stop this? Leasing land? I suppose it would work, but that is cutting those of us who are conscientious, ethical and moral out of more ground.

Iowa needs more public ground, no doubt about it. How does the State go about acquiring more ground? The State can’t afford to compete with well to do out of staters who are willing to pay 5-6K per acre for ground that is only good for rabbits, deer and ‘yotes (Iowan for coyotes) .

I have always been an advocate of resident land owner’s rights. It is your ground, do with it what you wish, as long as it is with in the law. If you wanna lease it, then lease it. If the State figures out they can make money from you leasing your ground, they will. This may include a special tax on leased ground. Your tax wouldn’t be based solely on CSR, but on BBP (Big Buck Potential). I can see the State looking at what King Ranch charges to kill a big’un and tax accordingly. Now add to that the license you would have to get from the State to lease your land. The State would have to come to your proposed leased land and do a BBP assessment. They ain’t gonna do it for free and they are gonna charge you the tax whether anybody kills the big’un or not. NR land owners, wanna hunt every year? See above. Land owners that wanna run hunting lodges for profit? See above. IBA wanna bring in more tax money for the legislature to buy more public ground? See above. Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.

I suppose I could read everything again and make more comments, but the weather is beautiful and its time to go outside and play.

I guess I’ve never “crossed quills” with a Ph.D. before and I don’t expect to win this one. Winning being defined as changing your mind.

Oh yeah, the Cubs are gonna sweep the Sox today!!!!!!

You should make sure Zambrano isn't pitching before such prophecies. Didn't I read those same posts last year?, or was that someone else?
