Hiking boots

As many know I just spent several week in the Bitterroot Wilderness. I had two pair of boot with me and one of them was not up to the country at all. I was pretty happy with the 10" Danner Pronghorns. They kept my feet comfortable at all times, up, down or side hilling.

I want to own one pair of boots that are a step above these. Because of the high level of activity I intend to buy a uninsulated boot. Denali by Meindl are currently at the top of my list.

Any and all input is welcome.

Thanks

Maybe a high quality hiking boot like Vasque would work better? If insulation isn't a factor maybe looking in another section of the sporting goods store?

I have gone through several pairs of Vasques and Merrills and really like them. I wear them to work most every day and they last about one year before I need to replace them. If you're only wearing them for hunting maybe you could get longer life?

Also, I think Danner makes higher quality boots than the Pronghorns. I still have a pair of their top end boots that I bought in '99, they are not as waterproof but they are still very comfortable and the soles are in tip top shape. I think they retailed for $275 but I bought them on a close out sale for like 80% off or something... it was SWEET for a cheapy like me.

Yup, danner does have some higher quality than the pronghorns. I've still got a pair that my dad got me "when my feet finally stopped growing" I think I was 16. So they're 12yrs old now and I've worn them every hunting season. the inner lining is just starting to get loose but I seal them every year and they still keep the water out. They're the ones that lace down to the toes.

Here's a link to some of the upper end Danners... Mine are the 600 gram Trophy style. They still are the most comfy boots I have owned.

DANNER

Just my preference but for high activity level and rugged terrain, I much prefer a lower cut boot or even dedicated hiker like Muddy mentioned. I haven't tried these yet but sure have had my eye on them. Nice 'tweener being 6" and light but still leather and Danner quality. They don't give them away though. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

Danner Light II Hikers

I've got a pair of the Danner GTX hikers, they work great for warm weather hunts and are really comfortable. I've ran around in the mountains and flats in WY with them for quite a few years. The low tops don't give much ankle support though in the rocky terrain.

I will say that the Trophy boots are HEAVY. Not bad in Iowa but if I were heading to mountains I'd take my Pronghorns hands down.

I bought a pair of the cabelas miendel hikers and have used them several times hunting elk and mule deer out west in the mountains as well as hunting antelope in Wyoming and also just hiking the rockies with my wife.I have never had a single blister from them and they have been the best boot I have ever owned as far as quality. I will be getting another pair for backup real soon. The only problem I have with them is that I want to wear them all the time and I'm wearing out the sole on them finally.
Never owned a pair of danner boot's but have never heard anything but good about them.

I have a pair of the Danner 6" Frontiers, I have worn these boots EVERYDAY for a year and half and they are still as comfortable as the day I bought them. It took me 2 years of everyday wear to burn through my first set of Frontiers, before that I wore Red Wings and they didnt hold a candle to the Danners.

I believe I posted this back before your trip when you asked.

I own the top of the line Danner Elk Hunters, they are incredible boots and I wore mine the first two days while trekking the Idaho mountains. Then I put on my Miendl Denali, it was like night and day guys. The support, quality and craftsmanship of the Meindl's are the best I have had on my feet, period. You won't be sorry Mike with your purchase.

oh and I told you so! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif

I second the Meindl's. I have the Perfekt hunters and they're extremely comfortable. The only issue I have is that the tongues squeak where the leather rubs together. A little mink oil fixes that though.
Also, Muddy brought up the Merrill brand. Those things are awesome too. I wouldn't be afraid to get pair of them for hunting if you were going to do alot of hiking.

For straight-up non-insulated hikers - I LOVE my new pair of Danner Mountain Lites. If you walk as much as I do throughout the hunting season / shed season - good boots are an absolute requirement.

Thus far, the only real complaint I have about my Danners is the fact that the tongue is seperated by the upper which creates far more "junk" that ends up inside my boots (sticks, twigs, sand).

Other than that, they are the most comfortable boots I've ever warn. This shed season will be the true test, but for now they rock. Here is a link to a full story featuring pictures of the boots I wore out in about a year and a half.
