Hoists? Help!

I am looking into getting one, maybe 2 electric winches. I need all input that is out there. I am looking into one from cabelas. I read a review though where a guy talked about his freezing up when it dropped below 40 degrees which has me nervous. I will have it in my garage, above the ceiling, so really where its not insulated, so it will be cold. Should I be worried about it freezing up? What do you guys use? Any good brands for a decent price? I just bought a house and dont have much coin to throw around, but a chain hoist is 50 bucks, and the 880 electric is 100 bucks right now..I think the electric would be handier...but any and all opinions are wanted..thanks!

Heck, I got a Hunters Specialties block and tackle deer hoist that works great and it was only about $30.

Now, are you looking to hoist more than deer? It sounds like it but I wasn't sure. If so, I'd stick with the chain hoist and hope your rafters hold.

Paul's Discount had them in their last ad for $9.99.

I went with a chain hoist this year. Picked up the biggest one they had at Orschelon's and it cost me $30. Way over kill for deer but I thought I might have other uses for it around the farm. It is ssllllooooooowwwwww but effortless. I thought of sinking an eye bolt in the floor, attach the hide to the eye bolt with a section of rope, and hoist away to skin deer.

I don't understand why the electrics are affected by cold. Do you have an attached garage?

Check Northern tool or Grizzly tool online sites for hoists. I suppose Harbor Freight would also be an option for a cheaper hoist.

we just put up the one from cabellas thats 220 and 440 pounds depending on the way you use the cable and it works great other than the cable bunches to one side if you dont guide it back and forth with youre hand but it works slick.

If you are just lifting deer go to Wal-Mart and get a $20 boat winch. I have one in my machine shed and it works great!

I'll second that. Add a 18v dewalt cordless with a 3/4 inch socket and you have yourself the fastest deer hanger around!

I bought a 7:1 block & tackle at Theisens this fall for $12.

Has been it in a tree in my yard all season.

Seems to be working fine, used it twice this week at sub zero temps.

My 8 year old granddaughter can hoist a deer by herself. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
