How much are antlers worth?....

Do a search on Ebay for antlers. That will give you a good idea of what people are willing to pay for bone. There are so many variables such as condition and freshness to answer your question. It also seems that some sellers can get more for the same antler than another seller can. Are they worth what they get for them? I'd have to ask the buyer.

What's the going price for deer antlers? Just curious what you seen racks or head mounts sell for. Seems to be more interest in head mounts for decorations by restuarants and places like Cabela's.

How about sheds?

I don't believe the measure of a true sportsman should be of whether he sells his antlers or not. The guy that sells a B&C buck to pay his bills or feed his family would sure gain my respect, it just depends on the circumstance. I guess it also might make a difference on you definition of a true sportsman. I've seen people sell antlers for all sorts of reasons some good and some bad, but I've never questioned what kind of sportsman they were for selling antler.

In my humble opinion, there are a lot of things that make a "true sportsman". Personally I value the antlers as low on the totem pole. How the hunt is conducted, the camaraderie, the ethics/legal aspect and of course, the venison! We may not have the antlers forever, but we'll have the memories. Just my humble opinion. Everyone to their own!

I sure wouldn't have any problem if a person sold antlers from a deer he killed. Don't think it makes them any less of a sportsman either. If someone wants them bad enough to pay for them, cool!

Now if a person goes hunting with the intent to sell the antlers .... well, that's a different story.

well, if all your gonna do is sell the antlers, and eat the meat, why not shoot a doe instead? let the bucks get bigger for someone else. It just seems logical to me...

In my opinion what a person does with his antlers is his own business provided that they were legally obtained. As for me I buy antlers occassionally and make projects out of them such as lamps, bookends, candle stick holders, coat racks, even do some antler carving. I never knowing purchase any antlers if there is the slightest question in my mind as to if they were obtained legally. One would be surprised as to how many hunters have a pile of antlers that they have harvested in the corner of their garage and they have no interest in them. Why not purchase those antlers and turn them into a nice project to be appreciated? Just another thought here......

I haven't posted for awhile but I had to reply to this thread. This year I sold a bunch of shed antlers, many of them large, some were even whoppers, larger than I may ever find again. This shouldn't make me any less of a sportsman. I teach for a loiving and make just enought to get buy. Selling those antlers allowed me to buy my dream acreage in the heart of big buck country. I can watch deer from my step while drinking coffee in the morning. I watch them and have done alot with my property to make it better deer habitat. I also dream each night of big one I may take this fall and if I don't getting out there each day will make it all worthwhile, that makes me a sportsman. I also payed for an engagement ring and a wedding. My new wife gives me all of the support in the world for my love of the outdoors and obsession with whitetails and if selling antlers was what I had to do to make her happy then I'd do it again. I shot a B+C buck last year and if someday in the future I need to sell it to feed or clothe my family then I would and this shouldn't make me any less of a sportsman.

I don't have a problem with the legally taken antlers being sold. However, I would caution the younger people out there that you might someday have $$$, but if you sell those antlers, you might have $$$ but you won't have the antlers. Don't do something you might later regret unless it's your last choice or you're sure you won't look back.

Me personally I wouldn't sell any of my antlers. Theonly reason I would sell them if I was in desperate need of money.

Through the grapevine---there are certain individuals who will buy your big boys semen if he is worthy. It would take some careful planning in the field for it to happen. And its not me ---just heard about it.

Everybody that buys the hunting videos,is actually buying antlers. You are making payroll for someone else to go out and harvest deer and get paid for hunting it,you purchase the video(in which it is in the thousands if not more sold), they feel they have a market, and next year they go and shoot more.So if you have ever said that you would never buy antlers, and you have bought a video, you have actually bought antlers, it's just that someone else has them in their posession. So in a sense the video equals antlers that people buy.

TRACKER YOU ARE AWESOME. It's about time somebody said it. I'll take it to the next step of controversey. The state is always crying about "we don't have enough money for this or that" or "that's not in our budget for this year" That is straight bull crap!!! It is these same people who make the videos who come into Iowa and kill one of those Iowa bucks on video and completely CAPITALIZE--when we as consumers buy that video. Oh sure-those video people might throw a little money our way, but it isn't comparable to the money made off of the sale of a videotape. When will the state realize we have a renewable resource in our big turkeys and deer, and start charging the"going rate" for the opportunity of a lifetime. I can guarantee the outcome would be a surplus of money and we could start paying our fisheries and wildlife biologists for the state(which by the way is a 4 yr. degree) more than just $18,000/yr. I completely understand that the people who would suffer are those that come into this state as relatives or buddy hunters. But what would change is the hype and hysteria that has tainted the hunting industry. I would much rather an IOWAN from IOWA kill the big boy rather an outsider who has everything to gain and take ,without giving back.Go to my state fair comments for a different perspective. It is past time to return to why we hunt in the first place and stop supporting those whose first interest is financial gain.

Haven't ever sold any antlers, but I have bought a couple of nice head mounts. I look at them as no more than wall hangings or a print.

My original post concerned the value and not the right or wrong of the issue. An aquaintance who has hunted for more than 50 years is contemplating getting rid of his trophy collection. He may donate the entire collection to a 501C3 non-profit, but would like to know the fair market value for tax purposes.

tk--I salute you as well. Morality in the hunting industry is becoming non-existent. All people who read the comments on this site, set aside time to examine your conscience before the season starts. We owe it to ourselves, and we owe it to the game we pursue.
By the way-tk- some Native Americans teach to walk away from all of your worldly possessions--only to find them return to you TENFOLD as a reward for your faith and initial sacrifice. I guess my point is that you will be rewarded some day for not trading for those giant sheds in your story. We should ALL learn from your story!! Keep 'em coming---Kokomo Joe.

Well, if I was that Rompola dude and somebody offered me $1.5 million for the head...consider it sold!

In fact, if I could get $1000 for a rack I would sell it. It let me buy some hunting paraphernalia that my wife has currently vetoed.
