I assume you are talking about the retractable life line that is being marketed by a number of hunting equipment retailers?
If so, I can’t help you. Sorry. But I also wonder if the retractable lines would work as they should under wet, freezing, snowy, or icy conditions?
This year we have been making our own life lines using a 25’-35’ rope depending on the tree stand height. On the life line we tie a prussic knot with a carbineer in it. We climb the tree and secure the rope to the tree at the same place I would normally attach to the tree with my safety harness. The life line rope is also tied off to a stake at ground level. The life line rope must be relatively taught for the Prussic Knot to work properly.
When you are ready to hunt the stand hook up to the life line, climb up to the stand and go hunting. You are safely secured by the life line.
I will be taking down all of my life lines when I am finished hunting this year. I don’t want them to be exposed to the weather for extended periods of time.
I always use my linesmans belt anytime I am hanging a tree stand or putting up steps to the stand. If both of my feet are off the ground, my linesmans belt is around the tree and hooked to my safety harness.
