In the United States, health-related statements on nutrition information labels are regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration. While advertising is regulated by the Federal Trade Commission. According to the FDA, "health claims describe a relationship between a food ingredient, food component or dietary supplement, and reduced risk of a disease or condition related to health." In general, claims for health benefits for specific foods have not been evaluated by national regulatory agencies. In addition, research funded by manufacturers or marketers that can form the basis of these marketing statements resulted in more favorable results than independently funded research. While there is no precise definition of "healthy foods," the US Food and Drug Administration has warned food manufacturers that they do not label foods as "healthy" when they are high in sugar, salt or fat.
