Hunter becomes the hunted

As I usually do I waited until dark to climb out of my stand last night and as I was walking out of the woods into a clearing I saw a deer about 60yds away from me. I froze and looked through the binocs to see that it was a pretty good sized buck. About this time he looked up at me and gave me the stare down for a few moments trying to figure me out. I thought he would turn and blow out of there but instead he closed the gap between us to10 yds! As i lowered my binocs he finally turned and hightailed it into the woods. My kids call me an ornery goat all the time but I didn't want to butt heads with this guy!

Had that happen to me one time last year. I was hunting down in a bottom that was thick and got down after an uneventful night and it was dark in there. Walked to the field edge which led me towards the house and was surprised that there was still some light out. I looked over and there was a huge bodied 8 point. I was right up against the fenceline and he came within 4 steps. I had my hand on my knife, even though it would not have done much good, but it gave me a little confidence. That experience ranks in my top 3 for all time most adrenaline.

I presume the wind was in your favor. I had a good size buck do the same thing to me while I was scouting this past summer at dusk. I too was holding binoculars to my face and was about to fill my shorts when I realized how close he was getting. And, like you, it wasn't until I lowered the binos that he nearly left his hide as he bolted out across an alfalpha field. I'm thinking maybe the next time I get busted on the ground by one of these big fellas I may pull out the binos.

Had it happen to me before as well, and is why i never travel without a firearm. Swore he was gonna attack. And the doe are the ones we need to worry about...
