Hunter Safety requirement

I hope I'm reading this correctly. Tell me if I'm wrong, I want to be legal. :)

Resident and nonresident hunters born after
Jan. 1, 1972, must satisfactorily complete a hunter
education course in order to obtain a hunting
license. A person who is 11 years-old or older may
enroll in a course, but those who are 11 and successfully
complete the course shall be issued a certificate
of completion which becomes valid on that
person’s 12th birthday. Residents under the age of
12 can be issued deer and turkey licenses, but the
youth hunter must be accompanied by and under
the immediate control of or direct supervision of a
licensed adult hunter.

1a) Residents under 16 years old who
hunt under the direct supervision of their properly
licensed parent, guardian, or other competent
adult with the consent of the parent or guardian do
not need a Hunting License or pay the Habitat or
Migratory Game Bird fee. One properly licensed
adult must accompany each unlicensed hunter
under 16 years old.

1b) Residents 12 to 16 years old may hunt
without adult supervision, but must have a Hunting
License and must have passed a hunter education
course (see p. 8 for hunter education training
requirements). Fees are not required.

Persons exempted under 1a) or 1b) must
have a Deer and Wild Turkey Hunting License
to hunt deer and wild turkey.

So, my son is 12, wants to hunt a turkey this spring & early ML deer, has not taken the safety course yet, & will be under my direct supervision at my side in the blind. (He will do the hunter safety course for sure this fall).

All he needs right now is a tag???

I think a 12 year old needs a hunter safety certificate and if he hunts with you he doesn't need a hunting lisence or habitat stamp. Also needs a tag.

If your 12 and are going to hunt you need the hunter safety card. I would get this completed ASAP so he can buy a turkey tag.

Way I see it, if he is WITH YOU...all he needs is the tag. If he wants to hunt on his own, the course needs to be completed and card in hand.

You are correct, just needs the tag so long as he is with you.

He cannot buy the hunting license until he successfully takes and passes the hunter's safety course and after he does that, and buys the hunting license, he can hunt without supervision.

This is correct. We asked our local CO for clarification on this a few years ago for my nephew.
