I know the 17 year old should be writing this story instead of his dad, but the reality is that he's more of a twitter and snap chat guy...I'm sure some of you parents out there can relate. So anyway, here it goes...
A week ago my son Hunter and I planned to play hooky this Wednesday for the morning. I had half of a leave day left, and as long his grades are good (they are), we don't mind taking Hunter out of school for stuff like this. At that time, the forecast for the Wednesday looked great. Well, by the time it arrived, we had a huge rain event on our doorstep. It looked like we'd get a couple of hours in before it started, but when the 4 AM alarm went off we had a new problem...heavy fog! Well, we headed down anyway and worked our way to separate blinds. It took awhile for morning to break, but once it did, we were in the middle of it! Lots of gobbling around both of us, and around 7 AM I got a text saying "Dammit...just missed a tom!" Turns out he'd had a nice tom pitch out and head straight for the DSD...even left a hen to do it. Hunter admitted that he rushed the shot a bit, and only pulled a few feathers. I told him to hang tight and he might get another chance. It didn't take long. A short time later I heard some shouting and celebrating on the other side of the draw in the direction where Hunter was set up. I leaned my head out the blind window and heard a loud "I WASN'T GOING TO MISS TWICE!!!". A few texts later I found out he'd had two jakes come into the DSD, and he was more patient and let them get all the way in, picked out the bigger one, and zipped an arrow through his chest. A 20 yard run and the jake flipped over to do the bicycle kicks Here is how I found them when I got around to pick him up...
We didn't weigh him, but it was a nice jake, and had an almost 6 inch long beard. Anyway, congrats again bud...hunting with you is always a blast!
