Hunting Liability Insurance

My buddy who owns land is letting me hunt for FREE has been sued and is very nervous about lawsuits. Though he has nothing to worry about I understand AND he's wanting me to show liability insurance for myself, brothers and a buddy or two who may hunt.

How do I go about getting this, where, how much is it, how much should I get, etc. I need it to cover a small group of guys. Some kind of umbrella policy I would think. I guess I don't know where to start.

I am sure people who have done outfitting or leasing with multiple hunters might have an idea here.

**Also, I have a peice of land I own that I got $1,000,000 worth of coverage if someone got hurt and sued me on my land, is it possible that would work for people hunting my buddies place (obviously I would call my insurance person). THANKS!

I'm sure it will comfort the landowner if you have insurance, but you might want to also share Iowa Code 461 with them (read all the sections). Quote from this hyperlink: 461C.1 Purpose.

The purpose of this chapter is to encourage private owners of land to make land and water areas available to the public for recreational purposes by limiting their liability toward persons entering thereon for such purposes.

As cited in the chart in this Landowner Liability article, once a landowner accepts an access fee in Iowa, they are liable.

I would call my home owner/auto insurance provider for their opinion on where to get a blanket policy.

Just a thought, you could have a lawyer write something up that would keep the land owner safe if anybody got hurt. Have all parties involved sign.

These are the insurers I use for my club in NC. We have 1,933 acres with 18 members. Cost is $427.00 total per year.
