Todays paper reports "Record amount of deer meat donated", it states that 6,344 deer were donated during the 2005-2006 hunt. This was up 234 percent from last year and surpassed the DNRs goal of 5,000. Dale Garner, the department's wildlife bureau chief, stated "We are getting venison to the needy, we saw a greater antlerless harvest, and it shows you that hunters are stepping up to the plate to reduce deer numbers". Good job boys and girls, this is the kind of articles we need.

I just heard something this morning about the HUSH program on our local tv news. It seems that some of the food pantries either won't or can't take the meat because it isn't USDA approved. I didn't get it all but it sounded like even thought the lockers were inspected the meat was not and that caused a problem. They said when they contacted the DNR that they didn't know any thing about it. Has any one else heard any such thing? This was on KTVO channel 3 from Ottumwa and Kirksville.

The article in the paper stated that the House of Compassion in Marshalltown received 2,838 pounds of venison and were using it in recipes calling for beef, which they don't get. The article also stated that 1 million quarter-pound servings were distributed through Iowa's food bank network and an additional 135,000 venison meals were served at Iowa prisons. There could always be a food bank run by a PETA member who could refuse the food I guess.
