After shooting my bow bird on Sunday, I thought I probably wouldn't get a chance to try for a shotgun bird for a couple weeks. I hadn't planned on hunting until then.
I checked in here this morning, then went to the post office and mailed a bow to Ironwood. I was just going to head back home but since I was all ready on the north side of town, what the heck, let's go for a short fossil hunt. Well.........that didn't happen.
I made the seventeen mile drive to the fossil beds and imagine my pleasant surprise to see a large group of birds feeding in an easterly direction along a field edge and long shelterbelt.
After a quick plan of attack, I drove around the section to get in front of them and slip in to the shelterbelt from the back side. I drove to within about a hundred yards of the shelterbelt, then scurried over to it and got in the prone position in the tall grass and started the wait. I didn't have very long to wait. About five minutes and here came the group.
I touched an antique Winchester paper shell off and the ancient side by side scored another one.
Nine inch beard, no spurs. They were both broken off. I didn't weigh him but this guy was heavy!
I could get another tag, but right now I have no plans for it.
