I was denied a license in the draw, but what if...

I could get antlerless-only tag. Could I then party hunt with a resident who has legal license, and kill a buck myself, while party hunting. Then have the resident tag it and then give me permmision to transport it home?

Sorry I have buddies that refuse to give up, they made me ask.

Thanks

Re: I was denied a license in the draw, but what i

Yes party hnting is legal in Iowa. Worst law ever put into effect. Good luck finding a resident to give up his anysex tag. Might want to double check your transporting also!

Re: I was denied a license in the draw, but what i

Yes. That would be legal, and many NR shotgun hunters do just that every year. Heck, why would a NR shotgun hunter pay for the any sex tag when they can save some dollars, get an antlerless tag, hunt with a resident, and kill a buck every year? Many NR are figuring this out. That is why the demand for antlerless tags has risen. IMO, It's like a sharp stick in the eye for NR bowhunters who are limited to 35% and don't party hunt.

Re: I was denied a license in the draw, but what i

You do have to be HUNTING WITH the resident (he has to be in the same woods with you) at the time you shoot the deer if I understand the regs correctly. It cannot be from just some person that bought a tag and does not hunt. IA tags are not transferable after the sale. I'll let somebody else elaborate on that but I think that is the way it works.

Re: I was denied a license in the draw, but what i

Your are correct Shredder. I know of quite a few NR that come here and buy anterless only tags and hunt with family or friends and do that very thing, so finding an anysex tag is not an issue with all those guys. All legal of course. I agree with supertech too. One of the stupidest laws we have and I bet it won't get changed anytime soon.

Re: I was denied a license in the draw, but what i

This is a terrible law just in terms of DNR law enforcement. Does this not put a terrible burden on our already thin DNR law enforcement officers?

How about this scenario.....

John Doe Young is from Michigan. He has serveral hunting buddies that are residents of Iowa. They are all aware of Iowa's party hunting regulation and fully intend to use it to get John Doe Young a buck on his antlerless only NR tag. George Doe Landowner, one of John Doe Young's hunting buddies, has one 1st season paid anysex tag and one landowner any sex tag. The other hunting buddy, Mike Doe Cornhole, has just one paid 1st season anysex tag.

They decide to do a little push on some of Southern Iowa's finest public ground. Just into the first drive the action is hot. They hit a pocket of 20 deer and they are flying out of there like flys off a fresh cow paddy. The shotguns are a blasting and the action is fast. They meet up on the top of a big oak flat where they had decided to meet up following the drive.

They are all carrying huge smiles as they meet up. They talk over what everyone saw and was shooting at. John from Michigan has a real nice buck down in the Cedars, George has a basket 8 down in the creek bottom, and all be damn, ol Mike Doe Cornhole has a small 6 down on the edge of the field.

There smiles turns into a confused "What are we going to do?" kind of look.

George Doe Landowner says, "No problem guys, we have three buck tags and I don't live to far away. They recover there animals from the timber and load up the truck.
They get the bucks all to George Doe Landowner's barn without being checked and all is well. Let the celebration begin, what a hunt!

Shortly later, John Doe Young, from Michigan, gets a call from his wife and must leave right away for home. He loads up his buck in the truck with Mike Doe Cornhole's 1st season resident tag on it and heads down the farm drive.
In a hurry to get back to Michigan he is pulled over just outside of town for speeding by one of Iowa's finest Iowa State Patrol officers. The officer makes notice of the buck in the back of the Michigan truck and decides to involve the DNR. The DNR agents arrive on the scene.....

What the heck, John Doe Young, from Michigan, has a real nice buck in his truck with Mike Doe Cornhole's 1st season tag on it and is heading back to Michigan.

What now?????

Re: I was denied a license in the draw, but what i

I thought I would stress this point ...

Party hunting is only legal during 1st and 2nd shotgun seasons

Re: I was denied a license in the draw, but what i

I am aware of two groups from home, (MN) that do exactly that every year except without the cornhole and speeding aspects. It would seem difficult if not darn near impossible for IDNR to do much enforcement of the strict interpretation of the party hunting rules during 1st and 2ond season. The two groups I am aware of hunt on private areas with shoot um all resident farmers who could care less about getting a buck. I dont think any of them are doing anything illegal at this point, but it sure would be hard to tell if you were wearing green pants and a DNR badge.

Re: I was denied a license in the draw, but what i

It doesn't seem too much different than me transporting others deer when they are nowhere around.

I bet if you were to chalk up a tally, residents are doing alot more fishy stuff than nonresidents. I think I saw a guy once that had a tag for his dog in Iowa, and we all know the baby on the way gets a tag too for gun season

What is unethical about legally party hunting in Iowa? I think the current arrangement is a loophole, but until it is closed by this state non-res have every right to partner with residents and party hunt. I hope they follow the rules and have a good hunt and then find the rules changed next year.

Re: I was denied a license in the draw, but what i

John Doe Young gets a ticket and belongings confiscated by the DNR for transporting someone elses buck with out the person present. Can't even do that if he was a resident!!

My one and only point was this.....

This and many other deer hunting regulations make it difficult for our DNR law enforcement officers that are already "short handed."

Rules and regulations will be tested and pushed by people regardless of what state they live in.

That's what disheartens me.

I guess we should point out that more Iowans take advantage of a stupid law than NR do.

If your a bow hunter and you harvest a buck, your done, unless you want to go get doe tags. Same with blackpowder. Why, just because your party hunting, can you continue to shoot deer without having another tag. I repeat, dumb, stupid law......

Dumb law but how do you think the deer numbers get put up year after year? If the herd wasn't controlled with party hunting do you think high powers during rut would be to far off?

Re: I was denied a license in the draw, but what i

My opinion again but if they wanted to kill more does, why would they move the season? During the rut, the does are sometimes hard to find while they are hiding from the bucks, You can kill more does waiting for them to congregate in cold temps on hot food sources.
