it is going down!
This was my 3rd time out this season today, and much like the first day, we got in a little late. But, as my good friend says, "it's better to be lucky than good!"
We set up in the light but not light enough to where the turkeys had flown down yet. We heard a few faint gobbles, but not sure in the wind if they were 75 yards or 300. We called a few times and my friend let out a loud fly-down cackle...2 gobblers cut him off, but seemed so far away. About 15 minutes passed and he let out a few more yelps - 2 gobbles right behind us about 40 yards away. I took a peek and 2 jakes were coming up the way...
Now, it was my last hunt of the season and I wasn't about to let a legal bird out of my sights - the thought of smoked turkey filled my mind so I grabbed my bow. They hung up a little as my buddy grabbed my handycam for fun...(we didn't have the good cameras, so we made the most out of a miniDV handheld ) I let out a few soft yelps and in they came. They crossed an opening about 20 yards out so I had to let it fly. The Rocket Hammerhead did the trick as I hit him a little high. But like Muddy says - "hit 'em high, watch 'em die!" It split the spine in two and ripped through the vitals....(and here I thought I shot him too far back!)
A very short chase later and I had my second bird of the season - a jake, but hopefully a very good tasting jake and rewarding no doubt! A quick prayer of thanks to the Creator for providing a meal, and we were out very early!
You know, it's kind of funny how a season can become so "long" in the midst of it all, but as soon as that last day is over, one can look back and say, "man, that season flew by." And I guess that's what happened to me - it seemed like forever between my hunts, but now that I'm done, I'm wondering when the next time will come that I'll step foot in a timber with my bow in hand...
But like all seasons, they never leave without some great memories. And mine happen to be my first 2 turkeys ever...and some great times with some great friends.
Here is a video if you'd like to see it - very raw but fun! (let's just say it won't be on the next DVD!)
