March 21st, 2009
Spring Turkey Hunting Update: Random daily drawings continue for remaining permits for the 2009 Spring Wild Turkey Hunting season in Illinois. Applications for turkey hunting seasons must be submitted no later than three weeks prior to the start of the selected season (see season dates below). Hunters can print out and mail in an application or apply online through DNR Direct. Go to the IDNR web site at http://dnr.state.il.us.
Turkey Permits Available for Recently Reopened Sites: Governor Quinn announced recently the reopening of seven state sites closed last year. As part of the process of reopening Castle Rock State Park, Hidden Springs State Forest, Moraine View State Park, and Wolf Creek State Park, the IDNR is offering wild turkey hunters the opportunity to apply for spring wild turkey hunting permits on these state sites. Applicants should submit their application form or apply online through DNR Direct for these special hunt areas:
Castle Rock State Park in Ogle County (CRSP)
Hidden Springs State Forest, 1st and 2nd season in Shelby County (HSSF)
Moraine View State Park in McLean County (MVSP)
Wolf Creek State Park, 1st and 2nd season in Shelby County (WCSP)
Hunters should send the completed application and check or money order to the address on the application or apply online by Mar. 23 to obtain first-season permits. Applications for later hunting seasons need to be submitted three weeks prior to the start of the season selected (see season dates below). For a permit application form or a link to DNR Direct to apply online, go to the IDNR web site at http://dnr.state.il.us.
Turkey/Mushroom Spring Safety: Spring turkey hunters and mushroom/morel collectors in southern Illinois are reminded that forested areas throughout the region sustained extensive damage from the ice storm that occurred in late January. Many areas, including a number of IDNR sites, still have downed trees, hanging limbs, and broken tree tops. Some areas may still be inaccessible due to blocked roads and trails when the youth turkey season is scheduled in the South Zone on March 28-29.
Hunters are advised to call ahead to site offices for the latest conditions on IDNR properties. Information can also be found on the IDNR web site at http://dnr.state.il.us.
