While making the trek up to Ottumwa on Sunday, Ghost and I commented on one issue in particular that the insurance companies have not addressed. With all the road constuction going on all over the state, the DOT uses several things in particular to seed down the ditches that as I rule serves as a deer magnet. Examples include hwy 218....miles of lush red clover Hwy 34......wheat growing out of control....both examples of quality deer attractants on busy 4 lane roadways. What else have you all seen planted in the ditches that "attracts" deer? I just think it is strange that the DOT plants "food plots" along major roadways and the insurance companies have not called them on this????

Wonder if thats what's in the ditches near Iowa City. More than a few times I've been travel'n down I80 and had deer feeding between the E and W bound traffic. Kinda gives you that warm fuzzy feeling at 70mph.

Always wondered what the bambi huggers would think when one of those pretty deer cause them a serious accident.

Along highway 60 on the west side of the state, they seeded rye grass in the fall and it came up wonderful this spring holding back a majority of the broadleaf weeds. then I was told early this spring they air seeded wildflowers along this new stretch of highway. Ough what a mess of thistles they will have after the rye dies off

Don't get me wrong, I love a good stand of timber....but have any of you seen the plantings of trees in between the exit and off ramps the state is putting in along the interstates? On numerous occassions I have seen HERDS of deer loafing in these "little timbers"....right next to the interstate. And with all of the forage that is being planted right by that others have stated....the deer are right at home!
