Inventory Ideas

With NoMO's ban on baiting and attracting (corn & mineral sites), it will be tough to herd them up to pose for pictures this year.

I guess cams will have to be set up on food plots (lightly used this time of year in my area), trails and possibly watering holes.

Any other creative ideas out there?

That stinks! Sorry to hear that. Can you feed the squirrels and birds:) There's gotta be a way to get them in front of the camera. Sure some one here has got an alternative idea or tricks.

All I found in the MDC regulations is referring to hunting and not pre-season pictures unless the word pursued constitutes using trail cameras in the pre-season. I will tell you that a personal conversation with the States Wildlife Biologist it was suggested that we use spotlight counts and mineral sights or supplemental feed at trail camera sights to get deer population counts on the farm.

(6) Deer may not be hunted, pursued, taken,
or killed—

(A) While in a stream or other body of
water;
(B) From a boat with a motor attached;
(C) With the aid of a motor-driven land
conveyance or aircraft;
(D) With the aid of dogs, in use or possession;
(E) With the aid of artificial light or night
vision equipment;
(F) Within any area enclosed by a fence
greater than seven feet (7') in height that
could contain or restrict the free range of
deer. Exceptions are provided in other rules
or by written authorization of the director;
and
(G) With the aid of bait (grain or other feed
placed or scattered so as to constitute an
attraction or enticement to deer). Scents and
minerals, including salt, are not regarded as
bait; however, mineral blocks with food additives are prohibited. An area is considered
baited for ten (10) days following complete
removal of bait. Hunters can be in violation
even if they did not know an area was baited.
It is illegal to place bait in a way that causes
others to be in violation of the baiting rule.

Recent changes to the wildlife code, like in the past few weeks. This is for less than 10 counties in NoMo (Macon, Adair, Sullivan to name a few)

Before I started using minerals I would move cameras as the food sources changed. Mulberries and plums are golden this time of year until early July.

If you can't put any minerals out I'd wait til late July/August and put them on beans and alfalfa. Water can be just as good as mineral if they don't have many options.

Apple trees! Secluded water or you can get apple scent oil concentrate and spray it on a mock scrape, the scent last will last long enough for deer to check frequently. Been dealing with this in WI for years already...

Says right in there now, that SCENTS & MINERALS are NOT regarded as bait...

From my understanding, salt licks and minerals are fair game!
