Invisible dog fence

I did a search here and couldnt come up with anything on these. I am looking to fence about an acre of yard for my lab, tired of him showing up on my trail cam. Does anybody have experience with these?
My questions are:
Which is better, battery collar or rechargeable? Seems that the battery collars would last months rather than days for a charge?

How durable is the wire, any breakage problems? I am wanting to include a small area of timber to give him somewhere to take care of #2 other than in my yard (he currently does not use the yard but prefers the field). I am concerned that tree roots, moles, etc might be a problem for that 20ga wire. I also need to cross a gravel drive and am concerned about the rocks destroying the wire.

What did you use for installation, lawn edger?

Any brand suggestions or features to look for?

Thanks...

I put an underground fence in a few years ago at my house. (did about 5 acres) I think that they work really well. I didn't use the 20ga. wire that the gave, I upgraded the wire to 12ga. because I was also afraid of breakage. I used a spade to put mine in through the yard, and then just stapled to the bottom of my wooden fence posts the rest of the way around my place. I also had to cross a driveway, and what I did was to put a piece of 3/4" steel pipe in and then pushed the wire through that. If you do upgrade your wire you might as well get a large enough spool that you don't have to do any splices.

My brother in law installed one to keep his labs in or tried too. The batteries were always dead and the dogs were always out. After several trips for batteries and trying differnt units, he called the company and explained his problem that it wouldnt work for an extended period of time. The first question he asked him was do you have a Lab? Then he went on to tell him that they know how far they can stay away from the fence w/o getting shocked yet the alarm of them getting close will continue to work until the battery goes dead and out of the yard he walks. The Labs may be smarter than one thinks. This may be more than an isolated problem if the company representative has had this happen many times.

Put one in for a friend. Upgrade the wire to 12 ga and used a lawn edger. Where we had to go across water we just threaded the wire through some bricks and dropped them in the water where we wanted them. He has a 110lbs yellow lab that loves to swim. beleave it or not he would only go out to where his collar started to beep. He used the rechargable kind and said it worked great. He said at first when the dog was learning the charge wouldn't last that long 2-3 days but after the dog figured out what was going on it lasted a lot longer.

I considered using the pipe for crossing the driveway, I dont see how it would survive otherwise. I had not considered upgragding to heavier wire. I assume any single wire would carry the signal fine?
I cant see much difference in the various brands as they all appear to do basically the same thing. I really like the idea of the wireless unit made by PetSafe, but the range is fairly small, 90' radius. Frankly I'd prefer his #2 be more than 90' from my doorstep (think 2 year old that likes to pick up "rocks"). I would think with the trend towards rural acreages that they would come up with a larger range unit.

Allthough it would be pricey you can get larger coverage from the wireless. More than one unit can be used with overlapping coverage. Sort of like a figure eight. Even more if you want.
For the hard wired versions, it's a good idea to get one with lightening protection. As for Fas-trac wire, you can make your own. Simply twist it together.

Shovel, since you work for Cabelas and thats where I plan to order it, do you have an opinion between the Innotek SD-2200 and the PetSafe Deluxe model (on sale)? Both look pretty good.
Also, is there anything special about the wire they use? 500 feet of wire for $40 looks waaaay overpriced and I'm going to need more.

Thanks

KPM- Trust me, my lab isnt that smart!

Innotek would be my choice. As for the wire, I'm not sure. Give Innotek a call and see what they say about it.
