This link is to an online petition to change the state CCW laws to a "Shall Issue." Currently the decision as to who can have a permit is up to the local sherrif. If you are interested in this please sign the petition and pass the word to fellow Iowan's.

Done! Thanks Jamie. This is a very important issue.

While I do have a concealed carry permit, they are very difficult to obtain...especially in Story, Johnson, and counties with a high populations of liberal voters. Most Sherrif's in these counties do not want to be seen as passing out permits "freely"....they understand being on the wrong side of the issue could cost them their jobs. Note that the two counties mentioned are also sites of the two major Universities in the state.

Not to dash cold water on this, but unless there is different Governor in Iowa, this measure will be vetoed.....

I was told that you have to provide justification to the sherrif that you need one...like I have to "justify" that my life is worth defending!

What kind of steps do you need to take to obtain this license? Can you get it in any county and will it cover the entire state?

You'll need to take a short training class, written test, and qualify on the shooting range....some counties may have a little different requirements. The permit is good for 1 year, there are professional and non-professional permits.

Contact NSLI in Ankeny for more information...

I jumped all over this one since I am in Story county! Anyone in this area have any recent dealings getting a CCW here? I have read that the sherif is strict and you must meet a requirement on a "list." I guess protecting my family is not enough!

Too bad someone with ALOT of money doesn't fight this. So many of the current laws throughout the country are unconstitutional, but it takes $$$$$$$$$$ to get a case all the way to the Supreme Court!

Join the NRA (National Rifle Association),they do fight for your gun rights and with your help the $Money$ will be there !
This is a very important issue. You can win!
I live in Michigan, the county i live in has had "shall issue" for about 8yrs. Last year we the people voted for it state wide and passed it. The only reason you need is PERSONNAL PROTECTION . You must meet the requirements but almost any law abiding citizen will qualify.
To gain some great informatoin on your gun rights visit: www.mcrgo.org
Stand up & fight for your rights, the polititions will listen (if they want to get re-elected).
Many states have passed ccw laws already, join them!

jbutenhoff,
I got mine in Story county, but unless you or your family have been threatened...that reason will not be adequate....

How about this reason.

I close where I work. It is a huge building out in the new industrial park across I35 from Barilla. Normally there is only one person closing up at 7. Also they make me travel monthly across state to Oskyloosa, plus travel to Spencer montly as well. Do you know if any of these reasons will meet the local requirement?

Heck, Maybe I will just look into what it takes to introduce a bill to the State house and go that way! If politicians can do it, it MUST be easy!

Jamie

How about this reason:

John Lott and David Mustard, in connection with the University of Chicago Law School, examining crime statistics from 1977 to 1992 for all U.S. counties, concluded that the thirty-one states allowing their residents to carry concealed, had significant reductions in violent crime. Lott writes, "Our most conservative estimates show that by adopting shall-issue laws, states reduced murders by 8.5%, rapes by 5%, aggravated assaults by 7% and robbery by 3%. If those states that did not permit concealed handguns in 1992 had permitted them back then, citizens might have been spared approximately 1,570 murders, 4,177 rapes, 60,000 aggravated assaults and 12,000 robberies. To put it even more simply criminals, we found, respond rationally to deterrence threats... While support for strict gun-control laws usually has been strongest in large cities, where crime rates are highest, that's precisely where right-to-carry laws have produced the largest drops in violent crimes."
