IOWA DEER AND FALL TURKEY HUNTING LICENSES ON SALE AUGUST 3

DES MOINES – Hunting licenses for the upcoming deer and fall turkey seasons go on sale August 3 at more than 900 license agents statewide or by calling 1-800-367-1188. Information on season dates and license types are available in the 2002 Iowa Deer and Fall Turkey Hunting Regulations and License Instructions booklet available at the same license agents and DNR offices across the state.

The booklet outlines what is required to hunt deer and turkey in Iowa, the license buying instructions and all the regulations, including season dates and what weapons are allowed. All licenses with quotas are sold as first come, first served, including fall turkey, deer muzzleloader and the special deer seasons.

"We anticipate an excellent deer season," said Terry Little, wildlife research supervisor for the DNR. "There are plenty of deer and there are more licenses available."

There are 19 special deer hunts located in urban and county areas that provide additional deer hunting opportunities. The contacts and other requirements are in the booklet.

"Deer hunters can actually improve their chances of taking a trophy buck next year by passing up on the smaller, yearling buck this year and instead take a doe. If you let the younger bucks grow a year of two, they will be a pretty nice deer," said Willie Suchy, DNR deer biologist at Chariton. "I would also point out to people to check in to one of these special antlerless deer hunts to expand their deer hunting opportunities."

A resident deer license costs $26 and a resident fall turkey license is $23. Deer and turkey hunters are required to have small game hunting license and to have paid the habitat fee. There are some exceptions and those are also explained in the booklet.

The fall turkey hunting season is for Iowa residents only. Nonresidents can still purchase antlerless-only deer licenses by calling 1-800-367-1188. The any sex nonresident deer license drawing is complete but a handful of licenses are still available.

Nonresidents may purchase a deer license at the any of the license agents or by calling 1-800-367-1188. The nonresident licenses are available on a first come, first served basis until the quota is filled or the last day of the season, whichever comes first. Shotgun licenses are available in zone 1, 2 and 3. Bow licenses are available in zone 1.

The 2002 Iowa Deer and Fall Turkey Hunting Regulations and License Instructions booklet is also available on the internet at www.state.ia.us/dnr/organiza/fwb/wildlife/pages/hunting.htm
