Deer tested were clear of disease
Samples from 150 wild whitetail deer show no signs of chronic wasting disease, Iowa Department of Natural Resources officials said.
The fatal disease affects deer and elk and has been found in several states and Canada.
The DNR sampled deer that had been killed on Iowa roadways since April and all tests came back negative, said Dale Garner, head of DNR's chronic wasting disease program. He said as many as 800 additional samples will be tested.
The disease attacks the brain of infected deer and elk, causing the animals to lose weight, display abnormal behavior, lose body functions, and die.
Chronic wasting disease does not affect humans and there is no evidence it can be transmitted to cattle under natural conditions, DNR officials said.
