ironwood's first bow birdy

What a great time I've had this year trying to get that first bow kill. It has been a little tuff reading of others here taking their first bow birdy and wondering if I'd make it happen or not. If I had been gun hunting the season would have been over as soon as it started. I have had a number of birds in almost close enough, then today I have this great Tom come in from behind my blind spittin and drummin, real close, only to veer off before I had him were I needed him. I was feeling a little let down at that point. I started calling very aggressively and within just a few minute I had another Tom responding. I kept up the cutting and yelping until he was real close. I noticed he had some hens and another Tom in tow but I was not interested in waiting to see what the other one look like. At 10 yards broadside I smoked him and he ran off with my arrow still in him. I watch him slam the protruding end on a tree as he ran passed it and then he was gone. I just sat there for a few seconds then I jumped out of the blind and head the way he’d gone. A hen ran off as I moved that way then I could see a Tom acting kind of goofy but he did not appear wounded. At about 10 yard he noticed me and took off, turns out he was pecking away at my trophy, the bone head. All I can say is what an incredibly fun way to spend your time. You’ll notice the Limbchicken mobile in the picture, what a back saver. Thanks for that Limb. Also thanks to Buck Owen who suggested I put my upright hen on the ground with my jake right on her. That seemed to piss him off more than yesterday’s setup. YEE HAW

Nice bird! Congratulations.

Just out of curiosity...how far did that bird get after he took off running?

Moose, being a Realtor is great, get your five hours in and you’re done for the week. Who needs commissions.

Muddy, you know as well as I do you'll be on here with some wild head shot story in a few days.

HuskerinBadgerland, I am sure you'll shoot your birdie and be back here sharing real soon. I started to pay a lot more attention to my setup as the days went by with plenty of good advice coming from Buck Owen. Decoys close, upright hen setup on the ground with the jake right on her and face your decoys facing away from the direction you believe the birdies will come from. Good luck.

Shredder, madisonb&c has tomorrow off and will be out with another kid from school. I'll be trying to get a tom in for Zach and Mrs. ironwood during the fourth season.

Bodeen, I didn't even use my mulligan.

Alaskanwhitetail, he wasn't that big but a trophy to me, 8 7/8'' beard, 5/8'' spurs and somewhere in the neighborhood of 20lbs

And one more look at the Limb Mobile
