I have shared this before, but who knows where that thread is now. I was on a timber walkabout one time and the group included a legit, degreed ISU grad Forester. I asked him what ironwoods would be good for, as I have a fair amount of them in my timber. His answer, "Dulling chainsaw blades."
I was already in the habit of focusing on them when doing TSI/hinge cutting, but I aggressively look to take them out when I have my chainsaw in the timber. Some I hinge, others are just dropped. I do purpose to cut them off at about knee height so any regrowth is very accessible for browse.
If they are sporadic…. Cut em a at height for browse like u said & let deer eat regrowth. Sometimes they die. I cut everyone I see. Treated or not.
If they are super thick… pain in butt…. Id wanna treat em. Many options on how to do this. Cut, mulch or Foliar spray. Fire can be tool as well but I’ve just cut & treated. Or cut, let regrow & if they turned back into trees…. Repeat. Doing some cutting & treating thick stands…. U will have far less of it in time. The only ironwood I leave is on super steep ravines towards bottom where they hold the soil. The rest all get cut.
Fire is very affective on small ironwood.
Watch this. Timing of fire is critical. April 1 is target. Thanks!! Most of my timber is rugged and full of steep hills/ravines and was not looking forward to burning it but knew i probably had to. Sounds like that’d be best! Appreciate the advice!
