Is a food plot needed?

Ok, looking at hunt a piece of property in Wayne County next year. We are form Texas and do not utilize food plots often due to the frequent use of feeders. The place I will be hunting is about 600 acres next year's crop will be soy. There are several spots that could hold small plots.... We are looking at drawing for late muzzleloader and should be very cold. With that type of crop would some plots be needed?

Thanks

I'd save urself some headaches and simply see if u can pay for standing crops to be left. At least a few acres on each one. Lot more details I could go thru than that but it's what id do.

Deer can flat out pour into a plot late season. It's not like that every day and certainly no guarantee. Food with great cover close by is where it's at late season so I would for sure want some guaranteed food for a late muzzy hunt.

I'd pay the farmer to leave crops like Skip said and have them broadcast some winter rye grain into those standing beans in September...

Double plot for u and soil building for the farmer.

Thanks for the tip on the rye grain. I have contacted the owner and he said he would have no problem leaving some strips for us on a couple possible stand locations.

If you can broadcast some greens in those strips to go along with those beans that would be ideal!! Double cropping for deer at it's finest :D

I do hope they r big strips :). Being outta food late season isn't fun. But- with ur distance and season choice I still say have farmer leave grain and like above says- broadcast would help too. Cheap, fast & good insurance. Spend the extra time & $ or u r gonna kick urself later. Do it right.

Thanks for the intel when would be the right time to broadcast in those strips? We are going to make a May scouting trip if we get the draw. Then another in September to build stands. We have a 13 hour drive each way so its not like we can just pop over there.
