Just out and about tonight pheasant hunting- i sene some roosters about 75 yards out in a beanfield- no way in Hell would i ever get a shot at them with shotgun-- just wondering if it would be legal to shoot them with my .22 with scope and if it is legal - could u drive around with A LOADED clip or would the clip have to be unloaded to drive around with it in your car. i kno i would be getting alot more roosters if i could use a .22 but i'm not the "poacing- illegal" kinda person just want to make sure it is legal- before i think about doin it!!! and please dont respond if u have no idea. maybe if their are any DNR on the site that could help me out. thanks HUNTINGFOOL4LIFE

Even if it's legal why would you want to hunt them with a rifle!I would think that would take alot of the fun out of it.
Just my opinion.

The way it sounds you are seeing them from the road. You can't fire a single projectile(arrow, slug) from the public roadway or ditch. So no if you are plan to shoot from the ditch it is illegal.
Maybe you should grab a pair of boots and train a dog and enjoy the sport with a little bit of ethics. It sounds like you are trying to kill the pheasants not hunt them.

It can't be legal...it's just like hunting deer with a H.P...It just takes the game out of the hunt...besides it really isn't fair to the pheasants especially if you were planning on shooting them from 75 yards away when they don't even have a clue that your there and don't even have a chance to try and get away...but as far as driving around with the .22 roadhunting LOADED..that's illegal as hell, you can't do it with any other gun, so why would you even think you could with a .22, clip or no clip...it's not even legal to road hunt...I'm not sayin people don't do it but from what I've heard it's not legal...I could be wrong but I'm sayin what I've heard...keep it fair and get out with your dog and gun and be safe...Best of Luck to ya!

Unless they changed the laws in the last 10 years or so, shooting pheasants with rifles is not illegal. However as many have pointed out, loaded guns in cars or shooting from a roadway is. And I agree with the ethics question. Also, I'm pretty sure you would need permission from the landowner to shoot a bird 75 yards out in someones field. You can not shoot waterfowl with rifles, but last I knew upland birds (other than turkeys) were OK.

I think its a dumb idea to even think about shooting pheasants with a .22, Like everyone else said, get some ethics, and hunt them the right way!

i wouldnt try it bud, i think even if it was legal, that it would result in alot of wounded birds. because I dont know anyone that could say they can head shoot them everytime at 75 yards with a 22. course you can shoot them in the body, but if you ever shoot crows with a 22 in the body, half the time they fly away, and i think pheasants would be the same. as far as ethics go, i think you did the right thing by asking, and i bet everyone here would agree on that, its alot better then saying i went out didnt know if it was illegal or not, but shot a bunch of birds with a 22 on someone elses land

either way goodluck hunting man!!!

I don't believe it is illegal to shoot pheasants with a .22. Shooting from the roadway would be. A loaded clip is the same as a loaded gun in Iowa.

I have seen pheasants sitting in a field exactly like your talking. If there is decent cover (corn stalks, worked field) you do have the chance to get to them. After I have permission I walk right at them. I shot two this way a couple of weekends ago in a field with bean stubble... I could see them plain as day but they let me walk within 20 yards....

the rest is history. Your success may be less than 25-30%, but it is still better than 0.

Just my 2 cents.

Wow kid, ask a question and you get beat up over it. Are you from Black Hawk South Dakota? If you are from that Great State (land of plenty Pheasants)you know you can drive around with your gun uncased and a full clip as long as you don't have one chambered. (I'm Not promoting anything illegal here so don't get your feathers ruffled)! South Dakotans just enjoy more libertys. I've gunned my share of Rudy's (head shot) with a .22 Ruger and scope. We would lay up on round bales and shoot them as they would come out of the CRP and mill around in the winter wheat field. If you don't have a dog or the birds are grouped up and flighty late in the season, It's a blast! It's also a great way to take a handicap person Pheasant hunting! Don't knock it until you try it!

Relax guys, hes just asking a question. In a few states a .22 is still a legal weapon for phesants. Its alot harder than it sounds, trust me.

not legal....you can shot from the ditch but not w/rifle. glad you asked!
