I took my oldest son Jacob out on saturday for his first time to try and kill a gobbler. He has gone several time with me and watched the waylaying. He told since he was 6 he was old enough to shoot one. Well he grew enough over the winter to shoot his mom's Youth model 20ga. Charles Daly semi auto. Couldnt quite hold it up real steady by himself but with the help of shooting stix he was deadly. Saturdays weather sucked as we all know, so I tried to explain to him as best I could that the hunting was going to be slow and tough. He didnt care he wanted to go, So we did. I was wrong even with the 20-30mph winds and snow falling the birds worked great. Not much gobbling till they hit the ground. We set up at the edge of timber and a bean field at the bottom of the hill out of the wind. I fiqured the birds would want to stay out of the wind. Make a long story short we had 4 gobblers come from the south in to about 40 yards and gobble their heads off. Then a lone tom came from the north to join in the fun but he came to check out the Decoy first. I set the decoy up like i do when i bow hunt and it was a little close for the gun. He shot the gobbler less than ten yards as it was peckin the bobble head. I had worked with him to aim at the base of the neck and at the that distance with a super full choke you have a tight pattern. I told him to just put the bead on his body at that distance but he didnt he aimed for the head and neck and hammered him. Wow what a short hunt less than an hour. We beat the odds. I will try to get some pics posted real quick like. The bird weighed 23lbs and sported a 9.5 inch beard.
