The turkeys that we have out in the central part of the state are the descendants from an early re-introduction attempt using the Rio Grande subspecies. These birds interbred with escaped domestic birds and today their genetics are mixed. At the farm where I hunt in Custer County, Nebraska (about 1 1/2 hours drive west of Shovelbuck) the color of the birds' tail feather tips range the spectrum from russet to almost pure white. Most of them are kind of a buff color, but I've always loved the white tips.
