Jakes?

dedgeez

This season has been exceptional so far except for the weather. I have been traveling a ton for work, but the few times out have been great. I have high expectations for the next couple of years as I have called in more Jakes this year than I can remember seeing in past seasons. Every sit has produced groups of 3 -5 jakes coming in to scope out the dekes. I was wondering if you guys have been experiencing this as well?

yep, been seeing more jakes this year than the past couple years. last year's rearing efforts must have been pretty effective before the rains in June. The past couple years were not very productive and jakes were few and far between. If this year would dry out and warm up, we would be on course to see an increase in population statewide, (my guess).

Let's hope it continues to get better!

For those that are seeing more jakes and/or birds in general, would you mind saying what general region of the state you are in?

Between my own observations, and those of several other people that live and/or hunt near the area where my farm is located, numbers are still way down from say 5-10 years ago. Numbers do appear to be slightly better than last year, but still way off where they were even 3 or 4 years ago.

The area that I am referring to is southern Jefferson County, extreme NE Davis County and extreme NW Van Buren County.

well as much as I hate to tell, :D I'm in NE Iowa. Bird numbers are strong here, but I have noticed a lot more vehicles around also. Damn those Blackhawk county guys :moon:

I have seen quite a few jakes to now that I think about it. Had a group of 5 the first day. A group of 8 the 4th day. Seen a few others as well. I have seen a lot more gobblers than jakes though.

One outing I called in 4. Another outing the same 4. Yesterday afternoon 6. Most Jakes I have ever seen. They made the winter pretty well it sounds.

2 years ago I was watching 3 toms with what I thought was 18 hens...turned out to be 3 toms, 1 hen, and 17 jakes! I watched each jake walk by at 15 yards, and then stop at 40..messing around, dusting, etc. then I heard the noise, and here comes mr tom fanned out..he had 2 beards, 1 inch spurs, and 25.6 lbs! I wish I would have had that one on film!

I can count on one finger the number of jakes I've seen in literally about the last 5yrs.. I think they just steer clear of the area I hunt until they get 2 or 3..
