My long time buddy and hunting partner Matt and I traded a wrestling
camp where he lived in ID for any hunt of our choice. It was a fair deal as it
was cheaper for them to take us on a hunt than to pay us. The hunt would be
more valuable than we could afford. It was a great deal for everyone, except
that the camp only had 13 kids (rather than the anticipated 125-150), but A
DEAL'S A DEAL! Of all the feasible hunts, we chose what would be one of the
most physically challenging hunts in the largest Wilderness area in the lower
48. Here Kitty, Kitty.
I arrived in Missoula the day after Christmas, where Matt picked me and my 4
month beard up from the airport. We double checked our gear that night, which
was minimal but essential. We saunaed (old wrestler's feel good habit)that
night and had a good time telling lies and talking about the upcoming
adventure. In the morning, we had a short drive an ultra-small and hopped in a
4 passenger Maule. Flying over the wilderness area, it was obvious we were in
for miles on foot.
We landed at on of 3 small ranches in the 3 million acre wilderness which had
only the bare necessities. Being a wilderness area, it was a non-motorized
vehicle zone (thus excluding trucks and snowmobiles)and there were no horses in
for the winter, as there would be no one to tend to them. As we had planned,
all of our miles would be done on hoof.
Our guides where 2 legends in the Idaho Fish and Game Dept. One was a retired
Fish and Game Enforcement Officer who regaled us with stories of undercover
poaching stings, great bulls, and huge mulies. The other was a nearly retired
Wildlife biologist, whom had chased, treed, and tagged more bears and cats than
probably anyone in the world. He is currently working on a book which will
bridge the biology and mythology gap of cougars. Of course, being shy, we did
not pick their brains in the least bit (Sarcasm). The stories and the knowledge
they imparted to us were invaluable and every bit as enjoyable as the hunt
itself.
