Hunter Injured Wednesday While Hunting Deer in Jones County

An Olin man received a gunshot wound to his leg while preparing to deer hunt with his father Wednesday afternoon east of Olin.

Larry McCormick, 72, also of Olin, was in the process of loading his .44 caliber black powder pistol when the gun discharged hitting his son, Rodney McCormick, 47, in the leg below the knee as he was exiting the vehicle. The incident occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Rodney McCormick was air lifted to St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids where he was being treated for what was believed to be a non-life threatening injury.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources was assisted at the scene by the Jones County Sheriff’s Department.

I'M sure when they say gun shot they expect the worst.

They may also been out in the boonies where they couldn't get the ambulance???????

he could've been bleeding pretty bad and they couldnt stop it out there.. i would imagine that if you get shot a fair piece from the hospital you'd probably want to get airlifted as well.

it's obvious ya'll ain't ever been through Olin or are familiar with legit "small-town" iowa towns.

I wouldn't hold much faith in the "local" volunteers. Now I'm sure they have exceptional driving skills, but to get an ambulance from Olin to Cedar Rapids would take a long time even with Ricky Bobby driving!

did bonks fly'em, or is he out of Iowa City?

Most small town first responders can't transport either so they would have waited for one that could.

Depending on where the bullet hit in the leg it definitely could have been a life threatening injury. When they hear "shooting" they expect the worst and rightly so.

I don’t fly anymore. 23 years was enough. When I did fly I flew for UofI AirCare.

There are a lot of factors that are involved in the decision process to fly or ground transport a victim from the scene of the accident/incident. In the instance of a gunshot victim, I’d rather the First Responders or Paramedics over triaged me or a family member than under triage.

Having said that, you’d be amazed at what influence a free T-shirt will have on the triage decision. The University’s philosophy was to spend money on patient care and equipment rather than PR giveaways. Golly it feels good to say that after 23 years of being PC.
