Just Curious is All Part 2

Okay so now imagine, you want to hunt inside a field edge a hundred yards or so in the morning, yet you have the problem of walking through the field before you hunt it bumping all the deer off it. Its only human nature to walk the easiest path straight to your tree. I was wondering how you guys approach this situation. If possible I usually try to come in the back side of the woodlot and come in through the woods than the field edge, not spooking as many deer, it seems to help quite a bit but also takes alot more time and patience trying to walk through the woods. Just wondering if anyone else goes out of there way to their treestand?

I've thought about this question a lot. It was talked about some at a seminar at the deer classic but i still am not sure how to approach. The seminar speaker said to wait until the deer have left the field, and go into the woods. But just because they are in the woods doesn't mean they can't see you, right? I've also thought about walking through the woods to get to it, but sometimes this isn't possible and what about the deer that are in the woods in that early morning darkness that you happen to walk by. Not to mention the scent that you leave behind. I don't know the answer but it definitely is worth a discussion.

hey liv, if i have to, even though i don't want too, i will take the longer way around, if that doesn't work which it usually never does give up, save your money and buy you a helicopter and have your friend drop you off directly in your treestand

Real good question Liv. I am curious also, being that 2 of my spots you have to come in by way of field. Coming in through other land owners is not an option. The experience that I have had is when I go in really earily I spook deer but sometimes things settle back down before daylight. I've also tried going in these spots after daylight but in my experience I've spooked more deer this way.
It's tough when a guy doesn't want to spook deer but you want to hunt there in the am b/c the deer are there. Hopefully we get good responses and crack the code by October!

I play this game 2 ways. One place I can take the long way around and come in the back door, the other I can't, due to ownership boundries. As for the one I can't back door, I just wait a little longer, just after daylight and then go in and honestly I've came to the conclusion that my hunts where I wait till I can see are just as productive, if not more productive than when I get up an hour earlier and come in the back door.

If everytime you go to a stand you bust deer out of the field than I would rethink your options. Most of my morning spots I always come through the woods, that way most of the deer are still in the fields. Some spots just are not morning stands.

If you are bumping deer in the field as you enter, you may want to reconsider this area for evening hunts only. The only other option would be to go in as scentless as possible, trying to walk like a deer while hunched over, making an occasional light grunt or even a "moo", that way deer are likely to confuse you as one of their own, or a cow... might want to even walk in some cow pies before you enter...This may sound a bit out there, but give it a shot, I bet it'd work

I have one spot that is a narrow strip of timber that runs N/S. It is on a ridge that has a field on the East. I usually pull into the field entrance and park at the end, and every time deer scatter everwhere in the headlights. I have contemplated coming in from the West, although I'd have to cross a semi-wide creek and climb a steep slope up to the ridge. It'd be a haul, but thinking it would be the better way.

I have the same situation with one of my stands, LIV. Can’t get there from the back way because of property lines and a very nasty ravine. Instead of walking across the field I walk to the edge and follow the treeline to the stand to hide my silhouette. I’ve had deer in the field and they haven’t seen me, but I have bumped them inside the woods a few times. I also try to get there really early for the darkness to help hide me and because I tend to see more deer in the field around sunrise.

I always wondered if you got to the field edge and let out a coyote howl, if the deer would scatter and just go in the timber a ways, and then you could sneak in and after about 15 minutes if they wouldnt come back. i dont know if it would work or not, but i would think a coyote spooking them wouldnt be as bad as a human. just havent been brave enough to try it

I don't think a coyote howl will spook many deer, might locate a few turkeys

We all have this type of problem with stand entrance and exit. My question Liv is when you start busting deer out on your way in do you continue to your stand? If so do you alter your route or b-line to your stand?

Hunt on All4s

There is this one treestand I love to hunt and in the mornings I had to walk about an hour outta my way from spooking the deer in the field and as soon as first light here comes this field truck bombing down the field I can hear in the distance and all these deer are fling around all over and that just pisses me off enough to piss in thier tank its my property and I allow the guy to hunt it but it seems every time I went out of the way of the deer this crap happens.. But to answer the ? Yes I go out of the deers way so they dont spook...

All4s, if i bump deer in the timber, I just keep on going, usually im walking at a pretty slow pace, taking 2 steps pause, then 3, pause, then 2 pause and keep doing this, takes forever to get there, but i think it helps, I read it in some magazine, about how it doesnt sound like a human walking at a constant rate and if you mix it up a bit, they cant really distinguish what you are unless you trample right on top of them. who knows, i guess its something that will never be figured out

I still think parachuting into your tree would be the way to go

Practice your approach this summer to see which way works best or just realize that a morning hunt may be outta the question.
