one of my best friends is a game warden here in ohio and he stopped by to see my place this evening and he had a dnr official with him. boy did we have an interesting and very long coversation, i must have asked him a million questions. he asked me a ton of questions also like, if i thought our hunting laws were headed in the right direction, what all types of animals i seen in the woods last fall and do you feel that coyotes are becoming a problem? but the most astounding question he asked me was: If you had to guess how much ground a 4 1/2 year old mature buck covers during the rut from the chasing phase to the end what would you guess? i told him that i would guess that the average 4 1/2 year old would probably cover 8-10 square miles. he told me they did a study a few years back and put some tracking devices out on some bucks ranging from 3-5 years old to see just how far some would travel during the rut. he told me that most covered 8-12 square miles, some were in the 12-15 aquare mile range, some never covered more then 1 to 2 aquare miles, but the most amazing thing was how far the others had traveled. he told me that there was a few bucks that had covered up to 25 square miles and a couple that had covered more then that, he told me the most ground covered by all these bucks was a 4 1/2 year old they tracked in coshocton county at 30.8 square miles. that is a poop load of ground. i knew they traveled a long ways but i would have never guessed that much. he also told me that the tracking was done in areas where deer were plentiful. he said that he believes that the buck traveled that far because he hit certain areas during the chasing phase where a lot, if any of the does were not even close to being ready due to the extremely mild weather. i just thought that was interesting and just wanted to share it. never would have dreamed they would cover that much ground, guess he had a lot built up in him.
