NEWS: 2010 Kansas Vote Set To Decide Gun Law Wording
Next year, Kansas will decide if gun rights to an individual should be guaranteed.
Currently, the Kansas state constitution does not give individuals the right to bear arms, which surprised a lot of voters, according to The Wichita Eagle. In 1905, a Kansas Supreme Court decision agreed that gun rights belong to “the people” not individuals.
If approved by voters, the new legislation would replace the phrase "the people have the right to bear arms for their defense and security," with, "a person has the right to keep and bear arms for the defense of self, family, home and state, for lawful hunting and recreational use, and for any other lawful purpose."
"It's a technical fix to bring us in line with what most believe is a right we already have," Sen. Mike Petersen told The Eagle.
Most Kansas gun owners are not worried, however, and expect the resolution to be well received with a majority vote in November 2010.
