Keeping records on your buck

I was asked this question the other day...If I killed a buck in 1988, am I required to still have the tag for that rack? I had no answer for the guy but it did get me thinking. Any thoughts?

No way. Hope not, otherwise I've got several in the room here with me that are very much illegal

I do not know about Iowa, but in Illinois you have to keep the tag. If you don't keep the tag, you have no way to prove the deer wasn't poached. I always staple my tags to the back of the mount.

What happened to "innocent until proven guilty"?

I never thought about this until I saw people getting racks scored at the Iowa Classic. You must have the license to enter the deer in the books.

I vaguely recall reading on a forum that someone was moving to another state and had to have proof that the racks they were bringing were not poached.

What's a person to do with racks they didn't keep the licenses for???

In Iowa I believe the tag must stay with the animal until it is processed for consumption. There is no requirement to keep the tag with it after that. It seems like a good idea to keep the tag with the rack while its at the taxi though.
