Kids Hunting

I was wondering about the age kids can shoot deer. What are the rules and how you go about getting tags? I always thought kids had to take hunter safety before they could hunt deer but I've seen alot of your young kids taking deer. I would love to get my kids out as early as I can. They love going out spotting deer with me and are always begging to go. Thanks for any info you can give me.

I've asked this question before and got some mixed answers. I was told that kids can fill a parents tag. Since minor children do not need a hunting license when accompanied by a licensed adult, I guess this opens the door for kids under 12 to fill a parents deer license. Otherwise they have to be 12 years old and have successfully completed a hunter education course to get their own license. They can take the hunter education course before they are 12, but the certificate will be mailed on their twelth birthday.
Just my take on things, though. I'm not a lawyer nor do I play one on TV

Many people think that the kids cannot deer hunt. They can pheasant hunt, squirrel hunt, duck hunt, deer hunt, etc. They just cannot buy a hunting license until they pass the hunters safety course so they must be accompanied by an adult no matter what they are hunting. They can obtain a deer tag in their name. They cannot fill a parents tag unless they are party hunting during the shotgun season and have a tag of their own, same as if they were of age. At least that is the way I understand it and have seen it done. Get them a tag when you are confident they can safely handle their legal weapon and take them hunting. Harvest or not, the hunt will be a success and a memory you and your child will never forget!

I am not 100% sure on this statement so take it for what it is worth. I have always understood that the early youth season hunters had to have completed the hunter’s safety course to obtain a license. Later season have different guide lines and any youth under 16 is only required to have a valid deer tag while hunting under the direct supervision of a licensed adult. This makes it possible for children 0 to 16 years of age to hunt all seasons, except the age 12 to 16 youth season. Seems a bit off to me but I believe that is the way it is.

You can get a license for your kids before they are 12 for deer and turkey, you need to use their social security number to get one. Just like the youth season they have to be with a licensed adult. They have to pass the hunter safety course to get the special youth license for the youth season. I know this for a fact since I have had my boy hunting that last couple years for deer and turkey. He will turn 12 this February.

Ironwood and MRH - I believe you are both correct and said it better than me.

Take those kids hunting!
