Had a chance to take my 5 year old son out turkey hunting on Monday evening. The weather was perfect and we headed out to a new spot that I have never turkey hunted before. Our spot was not the traditional turkey haven deep in a thick timber, but rather in a creek line that is never more than 150 yards wide. We were so close to the road I could see the whites of the driver’s eyes. I wanted to keep it simple since this was Maclane’s first time turkey hunting. The only signs of life we had seen until 7:50 pm was 1 rabbit and 2 squirrels. As the sun started to set Maclane started to get a little chilly so he came over and sat down on my lap and began to try every call I had in the blind. He wanted to go but I asked if he could sit for another 15 minutes and he agreed as long as he could stay sitting on my lap. I had not touched a call in about 15 minutes. I was bear hugging Maclane to keep him warm and he was working the calls. Then the unbelievable happened, I spotted a tom in half strut off to our right at about 35-40 yards looking at our lone hen decoy. I whispered to my son “There is a huge turkey over there!” Using his God given instincts, he instantly called out a few soft yelps on the box call he was holding and the bird began to spit and drum and broke into a full blown strut. Maclane then quietly climbed off my lap and stood off to my right side. Not sure if the bird had heard the commotion of us moving in the blind or not, but he broke out of his strut and was looking our direction. I whispered “Cover your ears” and slowly pulled up, put my bead on the tom and pulled the trigger. Maclane jumped into the window of the blind and yelled “We got him dad! He is a GIANT!”
Needless to say this is the best turkey season ever. During the youth season my 12 year old nephew shot a nice big tom that I had called in and then a little more than a week later my 5 year old son calls in a nice tom for his “Buckaroo”.
