Killed my first Kansas Gobbler of the y ear....

Shed Head!!!
Saturday morning April 17th, the morning was beautiful and I arrived at the location that I wanted to hunt..

This was one of those days where I really wish I had my video camera with me.... I was hunting solo and when I got to the location that I wanted to set up, the birds were gobbling everywhere!!!! I had my back to a ravine and was facing a small field of native grasses and scrub brush. The field is only about 5 acres and has a tree line on the other side and a turf farm the other side of the tree line.... I heard birds gobbling from several different locations in the ravine and could see 4 birds across the ravine (probably 70 yards away). The 4 birds were still on roost and one of them was puffed up and gobbling his head off!!!!! I also heard 2 birds gobbling across from me in the tree line next to the turf farm......

I was giving them short tree yelps and everytime I bet a minimum of 8 different birds would cut loose and gobble!!!!!

It was about 6:30am and I could still see the 4 birds across the ravine and they were all gobbling!!!! It was pretty light and I figured that they would pitch down at any time!!! I remember looking at my watch when it was 6:32am, the birds across the ravine were still there and I had not heard anything fly down yet.... I picked up my slate call and gave them a small series of yelps and all of a sudden, a bird gobbled right behind me!!!! He scared the crap out of me.... Evidently, 2 birds had pitched out of the trees behind me and were coming to my calls!!!! I had to close my eyes and concentrate on getting my breathing under control!!! These 2 birds had to be within 15 yards of me when they gobbled.... The walked out in the native grass field about 15 yards to my right and luckily, there was a cedar tree to my right giving me ample time to get my gun up and in postition to shoot one of them....

When they cleared the cedar tree, i dropped the hammer on the lead bird..... He was flopping on the ground and the other bird took off running....

Next, a wild thing happened, the 2 birds across the field in the tree line by the turf farm pitched out of their tree and flew straight to me!!!! They both landed next to my dead bird!!!! They eventually walked away!!!!

The bird was a 2 year old bird that weighed 22lbs 9 ounces, had a 9 1/2" beard and 3/4" spurs....

In Kansas, you can purchase 2 tags, however, I only bought 1...... Last night, I went and bought my other tag and will go back out this week to see if I can get my other bird!!!
