What they did was got rid of the transferable tags and raised the number of nonresident tags.The way it's set up now they might as well just sell over the counter.You are almost guaranteed a tag every year now.Especially in the eastern half.Anyway,good luck in finding a place to hunt unless you have deep pockets.Our state has probably the least amount of public ground in the US.If you do find some good ground you'll be able to sit and stare at a half dozen other hunters from you're stand.

I've had to do my homework this year like crazy in order to find and defend a place to hunt, it's ridiculous. Even at that, the quality of the places I have don't come close to what I was able to hunt just five years ago. As I've predicted before, poaching numbers will go through the roof in the next few years. Some residents have even mentioned shooting every 1.5 year old buck they see, wherever they see it (poaching) in order to get rid of the nonresident $$$. I simply don't see any solution, the days of old are gone. I truly wish this doesn't happen to you folks in Iowa. I have to admit, it does peeve me just a bit seeing so many of you come to Kansas though, when you have the best hunting in the country in Iowa. If I were you, I'd spend my $$ defending resident rights in Iowa, or saving for your own land b/c Headhunter is right --> YOUR next. I've thought about out-of-state hunts myself, but that would make me a hypocrite, so I'll do my best to find a place to hunt in my own back yard.

More than 2,800 permits available to nonresidents in 12 deer management units
PRATT -- The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has announced that 2,840 nonresident deer permits are still available for the 2008 season. These are permits that were not taken in the May nonresident application period. They are Whitetail Either-Sex permits (hunter designates equipment/season choice, as well as one adjacent unit, at time of purchase) and will be sold to any nonresident who did not successfully draw a 2008 permit, beginning July 14, on a first-come, first-served basis at license vendors and online at the KDWP website (www.kdwp.state.ks.us).
Leftover nonresident deer permit numbers are listed below by unit:
• Unit 2 – 11
• Unit 5 – 6
• Unit 6 – 231
• Unit 8 – 36
• Unit 9 – 202
• Unit 10 – 727
• Unit 11 – 522
• Unit 12 – 137
• Unit 13 – 250
• Unit 14 – 323
• Unit 15 – 216
• Unit 16 – 100
• Unit 18 – 79.
Hunters who purchase a leftover permit will lose any preference points they may have accumulated for next year's drawing. Applicants who were successful in the nonresident drawing may not purchase a leftover permit. No hunter may purchase more than one permit that allows the take of an antlered deer. An antlered deer permit is required before purchasing a Whitetail Antlerless-Only Deer permit.
Thats 2,840 left over tags and someone got turned down?Come one Come all!

What is your best guess at why there are unsold tags? Lack of access, lack of deer, cost of tags, cost of travel?

Three of us drew our NR firearm tags this year. We had three PP apiece and by the looks of it, we didn't need them to draw. My nephew that we're going with has relatives down there.
I can feel with you residents about all the pressure. We live in a part of Iowa that believe it or not, isn't all that great for big deer and to go down to the southern part or of the state or wherever, is close to impossible because we have no connections there.
We have a ton of NR pheasant hunters in our area each year and can relate to how you feel. But on the other hand, some great friendships have been made while working with others.
I can guarantee you this much, we will in no way disrespect any laws and hopefully make some new friends during our stay.
Good luck to all and like I said before, I do know how you feel.

Last summer KDWP said they were going to do away with the T-Tags and raise the quota to fill the demand. Well,They did it! Within a couple years everyone will be tired of spending all the money to come and shoot a 100" buck then the hype Kan. has will be gone.
