Heres my ML buck.I took him 2 days ago.Everyones been trying to get him since bowseason started in Oct.They nicknamed him facemask for obvious reasons.I took him by hunting a piece of public ground thats very big and not real accessible this late in the year.I just walked in a little farther than most guys were willing to go and it payed off.Besides him I had over 40 does come past and him and a real big 8 pointer showed up last.I was getting ready to shoot the 8 pointer having dismissed this one as a halfrack.Glad I looked at him again before I pulled the trigger LOL.It was an easy 15 yrd shot but if you ever touched a ML off in the middle of 40 some deer in he confusion that followed I thought Id choked.

This pic shows how far the antler wraps around his face, its so close to the chin Im not even sure how he was eating.it actually starts curving back up the other side of his face.

This pic you can see the velvet still on the inside of the odd antler. It also show the injury to his head that caused it to grow that way.Looks a lot like a rifle shell that didnt penetrate well.Oddly enough theres still velvet on the end of the good antler to.

So whatta you think. Should I get a head mount of this truly ugly deer?

Ugly? I would call him "unique" I bet you never get a chance at one like that again.

I have a friend thats a taxidermist and had a buck something like yours brought in 2 years ago. It had a large rack and he had one heck of a time trying to mount because the rack on the one side wanted to come off when he started to work with it.

wow, thats pretty cool, I think a European mount would look awesome. Whatever you do, this buck will be a great conversation piece for years!

SWEET BUCK!! i've always wanted to get a buck that looked like that!! closest i've ever been was last late season on one that was similar to that. no shot though.

congrats!!

Ditto what bradsbucks said, that would make a very cool looking skull mount. Sounds like the extra effort of getting in on public a little farther paid off good for you !

That is totally awesome!!! Thanks for sharing! I'm not sure about a mount or not. I don't think you would regret it if you did.

Congrat's on a unique buck. It is amazing what can be accomplished by working a little harder than everyone else. I'd at least go with the skull mount. Too unique to not put on display.

Thanks guys, thought you might enjoy that. The reson Im going for the full head mount instead of the skull mount is Im not sure how much damage their is to the skull plate underneath everything. The taxidermist my brother in law showed the pics to said he could fix the skull plate on a full head mount where if I tried to skull mount it myself it might fall apart, I agree wth him completely. To unique a rack to try not to preserve it somehow, I probably wont get another one quite like it

Horst, are you from the Iowa City area??I have seen a deer on Dubuqe street north of butler bridge a couple of times that looked this guy.Had me wondering if he was starting to shed and the hide was stuck into the rack and was keeping it from falling off.Pretty cool!! Way to put in the extra effort!!

Horst i saw these deer on iowaoutdoors.com!!

Neat buck,it look's like his right eye is gone.Did he have any vision in that eye or could you tell.I don't know if I would mount him or not but he is a neat convesation piece.

Tracker, Im up in NW Iowa.

Buckhunter, the eye was intact and near as I could tell he had full use of it, the reason it looks like that is its real swollen, probably from infection.

Moosehunter, sorry, Im afraid he may have done a little breeding before i killed him

on the bright side Ive got my whole family out hunting does in that area so maybe we can controll the damage yet

Congradulation! Good job on going that extra mile. A couple of years ago my hunting partner shot a buck that looked exactly like that. However, the antler had not grown like that. The antler was busted off inside the skull and was just hanging there. We just assumed he had broken it off while fighting. That had to hurt when it happened!!

Horst, forgive me for asking, but you didn't shoot that buck on the blind side did you?

Just Razzin ya! What ever you do get a picture on here of his skinned out skull plate, be interesting to see what it looks like!

That kinda looks like a buck that is up at Fin&Feather in Iowa City. Same size and everything.
