Latest you've ever seen a rack

Old Buck

Life Member
Just curious what the latest is that any of you have seen a buck still carrying his rack. While shed hunting many years ago in SW Iowa, I spotted a group of 4-5 bucks. With binoculars I could see 1-3 inches of new growth on several of the racks. One buck, a 150+ 8 point was still carrying his rack from the previous year. The date was April 8.

April 14, I remember it well. A week after easter one year we spotted a buck in the Metro Unit of La Crosse, WI with both sides on. A small 6 pnt but was really supprised about it.

I saw a good buck while I was hunting turkeys on the 2nd weekend of 4th season about 7 years ago, I'll never forget that, he still had both sides and he was a dandy!

Last year I was shed hunting and I kicked up a buck with one huge 5 point side and the other side just had the brow tine and was broken after that. The ironic thing was i found the broken half under my stand during bow season that year. The date was april 16th when i saw him.

I saw an 8pt and 6pt this morning with 3 does both bucks had both sides. The latest for me was in late April and this buck still had velvet around the bottom of the rack. It made me woder if he ever shed his horns.

Several years ago we were shed hunting a State Park in western Minn and jumped a group of does with one buck. He carried both sides yet and it was April 15th. This was a BUCK! About 190 gross typical 5x5. They all jumped a fence into a sancuary and I held my breath because I just knew he would drop them upon hitting the other side. No luck. In 99 I was in Alberta shed hunting the Edmonton bow zone when I jumped a buck at close range. He was a 135 class 4x4 with both sides. Date was April 9th or 10th. Its hard to pick up sheds when they get up and run away from you.

It was the last weekend of April and I was sitting against a tree turkey hunting when a 120" inch buck came by, then a buck with 6" velvet covered beams came by. Never did get that gobbler that day.

dc240nt, did you ever go back and look for that big 190" buck or did anyone ever harvest the buck. Just curious as I am from SW Minnesota--where are you from and what areas of Western MN do you shed hunt?

Once on April 5th as we were heading out of town on a spring scouting trip, here was a nice 4x4 (120) with a bunch of does right next to town. Then a few years later I was turkey hunting, about two weeks into season and a forky and a doe came down the ridge in front of me, Probably about April 15

The buck was in Clay county, western edge up around Moorhead. This area is betwwe Clyndon and Hawley. I didn't get to go back after him. Not legal for us to look in the Nature Conservancy lands and thats where he headed. Although the person in charge of the Conservancy areas has, literally, a garage ful of sheds. Its also against the law to pick sheds in Buffalo State Park, which this person also governs, omly he and his kids get to look there. There was a 192 net typical taken the following season about a mile north of our sighting. I can't say for sure it is the same deer as I have never been close to the sheds although I have seen, held, and measured the 192 typical.

TODAY IS 4-3-02 AND I JUST SEEN A BUCK WITH BOTH HIS RACKS ON I CANT BELIEVE IT, I FOUND A SHED AROUND A MONTH AND 1/2 AGO, AND HALF THE DEER AREN'T EVEN LOOSING THEIR ANTLERS.

I just seen a nice 140 class 10 pointer with both sides today, 4-9-02. The location was SE Iowa.

It was about five years ago.I had been sitting at the base of a tree, turkey hunting for a while, late afternoon.Out of
nowhere a deer appears,20 yards away and its a small
basket rack 8-pointer,no big deal, except that the date was April 28th !! I could not believe it.
