Legal birds

How many of you let legal birds walk. meaning jakes. I have a thing about whacking turkeys, I can pass on a small 3 1/2 year old deer. but when jakes get in front of the blind. they usually get a stick beating. Just curious. I will let a bearded lady walk, just because i am a gentleman.

i will only shoot a jake early season if it is the last hour of the last day....

but 4th season is a different story, for some reason i cannot get a long-beard in front of me. i have hunted turkeys in Iowa for 12 years and never killed a tom during 4th season. yet somehow, i either ate the tag or shot a jake on the last day....
i have shot lots of shortbeards that time of year....

bottom line is i look at it this way, shooting a wild turkey is an accomplishment....any turkey!!!

looking forward to spring already!!!!

I feel the same, I cant really justify Quality Turkey management /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif I just like to shoot turkeys and since I switched to bow only a few years ago. I have been very fortunate to fill my tags. But on my third hunt last year I called in 5 jakes, and it had to be done. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif I ended up shooting a tome later, but dont regret shooting a jake. I would much rather shoot to jakes opening day and take someone out the rest of the year. I much prefer calling for others.

What was the Double Bull saying, Shooting Tomorrows Trophies Today, I kinda like that moto, I wil genearlly whack a jake too, unless I have alot of confidence in a spot or have a gobler nearby. This year with the bow for the first time a jake is definitely taking a dirt nap if he shos.

No pride issues here when it comes to jakes. Unless it is with a gun, which I quit using a number of years ago.

I let them walk. I have some good spots and I almost always get a chance to whack a mature bird. The oppertunity is there to get a nice bird, its weather you make a nice shot.

If its early and the birds are responding well, then no...but during 4th season if a jake comes in he gets a dirt nap no questions asked.

No matter what I shoot- as soon as I do I have the awful feeling that my tag is punched and I'm not going to be there the next morning. I'm not a very successful deer hunter but seem to always be able to fool a couple mature toms each spring so now I do let the jakes pass and would even the last hour of the last day. To each his own.
