Senate Passes Deer Population Measure
Plan Lifts Current Cap On Out-Of-State Licenses

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa Senate has passed a bill that targets the state's exploding deer population.

It calls for lifting the current cap on out-of-state hunting licenses for anterless deer. It also gives state officials the authority to allow more hunting in deer "hot spots.''

The bill is aimed at killing an additional 135,000 deer a year, which would reduce the population to that of about 20 years ago.

The Senate approved the bill Tuesday on a 49-0 vote, leaving a final version to be negotiated with the House, which passed a slightly different version.

Please remember this still has to be voted on in the house. Then it will go into committee to hammer out the difference between the two. Once that is agreed upon then it will be sent on to be signed or declined.

The above was from the iowachannell.com

This is from our Lobbyist:

> SF 206, the deer bill, passed the Senate with two
> amendments. One with little impact, but it may give
> some approval to pay for deer processing for Dept. of
> Corrections. Brunkhorst had such an amendment, then
> this subsitute was adopted. The second eliminated the
> $10 surcharge on next year's license for failure to
> report your deer harvest. HF 750 is to be debated in
> the House Appropriations Comm. this afternoon.

This is a highlighted version that the house currently has to work with:

1. Will leave non resi any sex deer tags at 6,000 each successful nonres can also get an antlerless tag.
2. Would take the cap off non res antlerless tag, limit set by DNR for management purposes.
3. Res landowner with 10 acres will receive two free tags, one any sex, one antlerless. Must show proof of ownership.
4. User friendly check station of sorts.Telephone, internet, just basic harvest information. Will have a fee added to next years tag if you don't report.
5. One dollar from every deer tag issued would go to the HUSH Program to help this program go state wide.
6. The DNR must confer with landowner who have crop depredation and issue tag if damage is found. Not an option for DRN mandated by legislators

Please take the time to call you legislative represnetitives and express your concerns and or support. If nobody gets ahold of them, they don’t know what we want!!! They are farmers and teachers just like the rest of us. Remember, please be polite! Here is a link to the iowa legislative site that you can find out who your rep is and how to get a hold of them. Also you can track these bills day by day! www.legis.state.ia.us Please feel free to get a hold of me with any questions or concerns.

On a side note there is a file in the federal legislature that you need to get in touch with your senator soon. Here is a brief synaposis of what the bill is about.

www.senate.gov to find your senator and to contact them!

Sen. Reed from Nevada has introduced legislation critical to all State DNR policies.

S339 It states: To reaffirm the authority of States to regulate certain hunting and fishing activities.

In a nutshell it allows each state to set policy on resident and non resident hunters and fishermen. Please contact our 2 senators and ask that they support this legislation.

Also, information regarding the lawsuits in Arizona concerning NR tags. This is not looking good for them! www.seazsc.com/new_news.htm Basically the United States Outfitters is suing the state of Arizona due the the fact they cannot get more NR tags for hunting in Arizona. They are purely in it for the money. What is going to happen is (I assume) don’t quote me on this, is the residents of Arizona are going to have to draw against the NR's for tags in their own state! I would be pissed! We need to make sure that this never happens in Iowa. Don’t be surprised if you don’t start hearing about this in the near future. We are already on their scorchers list of places to go. Please see the above stickey post about the USO and Arizona from a credited source! Please take the time to check this out, this does concern you! Again, pleaes get ahold of me with any questions
