Dealing with deer
The overpopulation of deer has become a problem in Iowa City. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources and a deer task force in Iowa City are being challenged with the best way to regulate our deer populations and the safest and most humane way of doing this.
Iowa City has made great efforts in its attempts to handle the problems in the best way possible. Just recently, the overpopulation of deer forced Iowa City to schedule a deer kill in February, in which sharpshooters were allowed to kill a certain number of deer. Many methods of population regulation were examined, but the use of sharpshooters was the cheapest, most humane, and safest for the citizens of Iowa City.
The meat from the deer kill is being distributed to those in need by the local Salvation Army. Those who oppose regulation believe that killing deer is cruel and inhumane and the use of sharpshooters to regulate the population should be banned. For those who argue that deer regulation should be banned, they need to look further that their argument of “it’s not nice to animals”.
The reproduction rate of deer could lead to the population doubling in two to three years, which can be very dangerous for our local highways. Population regulation is a necessity in Iowa City, and we applaud the approach and the methods they have chosen to take care of this problem.
