little room for error

I am curious to know how many of you would, or have already taken a neck shot. Myself, it depends wether Im carrying a bow or shotgun. Bow no, gun yes. I think it comes down to your confidence in your weapon and yourself shooting it. I have taken one neck shot on a whitetail, all that was needed to put down my biggest buck to date,(126). Although there is little room for error, a centered shot is devastating! Share your thoughts.

I took my Kansas Whitetail this season with a neck shot as he was facing dead away from me looking back over his shoulder. Unfortunately I had already hit him poorly and didn't not want to screw up any more meat while still putting him down quickly. It did its job but I would much rather place a bullet or arrow right behind the shoulder than risk the neck shot.

Ive shot tons of deer in the neck with my ole smokepole. If that is the only shot i got, thats what i will take, its just as deadly as a double lung shot, deads dead. I know tons of guys that their preferred shot is in the neck with a gun only, im not saying bow by any means. Almost every ole farmer i ever talk, thats the only spot they know to aim, shoot them in the neck with a slug they drop in their tracks. I wish alot of those guys would hit them in the neck because i find alot of deeer they didnt see fall after a double lung and didnt even bother to look for it

I've taken one neck shot with my gun and one with my bow. With the gun I didn't think twice, it dropped like a rock. The bow shot was at 15 yards on the ground at a water hole. The doe was quartering to me and turned to look over her shoulder, I put the arrow in the base of her neck and she went down on the spot. I didn't think it was unethical to take this particular shot but I would only take it under certain situations like this one. I've never had an opportunity like this one again but would certainly do it again if I did.

shot a doe with my 300 mag in the neck, that old mule looked more like a pez dispenser lol

That's how my friend dropped his 150" 10 pt 3 years ago. He was on the ground and saw the brute coming right at him. He drew his bow back and waited for the buck to keep walking to him. It didn't turn out that way, the buck stopped facing dead on with my buddy, and all had to aim at the white throat patch. Well he let the arrow fly and the muzzy eat. The deer went 20 yards and dropped. I guess it all depends on the circumstance and how I felt about taking it.

I've never tried it with a bow, but a good neck shot is about all I take with my muzzleloader. Don't know for sure how many I've shot this way, but at least 10, including my biggest buck to date. I've not yet had one take another step. A big part to taking this shot is knowing the accuracy of your weapon...it's gotta be right on. Personally, at 100 yards or less with my Knight, I prefer a neck shot over any other.

If the deers close and Im hunting with a gun Ill take it.Over 30-40 yrds away though Ill hold off for a shot at the vitals. Not because i dont think its effective, Im just not the greatest shot in the world and I know it LOL.

I've taken a few deer with a neck shot, 3 yrs ago the white patch was all I had as my 160's 5x4 typical held tight in the willows a mere 15 yards from me blowing at me. This yr, I dropped my buck at 250 yards with a neck shot. He was facing away from me and looking back over his shoulder and dropped like a sack, a neck shot, if well placed will drop them on the spot, with that said, I still prefer shooting at their vutals.

I was on the ground at full draw, had the pin right on the vitals, buck was on full alert, upon release, he spins and takes it in the center of the neck, went 80 yards. I would never recommend this with a bow but it turned out alright for me this time.
