Looking for Capes

Brett Morris

PMA Member
Hey guys I know I had a thread last week about learning taxidermy, well here's my delema. Now that seasons over I'm having a hard time finding any bucks/capes to practice on. I'm looking for a cape, a frozen deer head, a tanned cape, anything to get some practice. If you guys have anything I'd be willing to throw some cash your way.

Also looking for any/all taxidermy supplies I might need.

Thanks Guys

In taxidermy school we practiced on doe heads.. only thing idfferent is cutting around the antler burrs and whatever type of cut u may prefer down the back of its head, for example a "y" cut or a "7" cut.. you'll also have to decide if u want to cut it all the way down the back of the neck or doing a tube cut.. tube cut will save u time and thread

Definately ebay, can find some good deals and antlers on there some are reasonable prices to practice with. A few decent deals right now.

Brett,

I was just doing a little shopping, and this one is a steal. And it's Fancy. I would have ordered for you, but I already have three and was afraid I would get stuck with it.

Cape

Taxidermy.net is the place to check. Check often as guys are always cleaning out their freezers and good capes get sold fast. I have 3 extra capes that are being tanned right now and should be ready in the next month or so. They will be 100% prepped and ready to mount but will be a little pricey for one to practice on.

Haha not exactly the type of cape I'm looking for Nick. Any advice for the necessary tools I need to buy before I can begin? I have a pretty good idea of the essentials but would love to hear it from some "experienced" taxidermist

If your wanting to practice on tanning, I might have a extra back hide from a deer. If your wanting practice mounting, I would buy a cape that is ready to mount that way you can dive in and get one mounted up.

I started with a professionally tanned cape, which was shaved and basically ready to mount. After that, I wanted to get into tanning my own, and now have a fleshing machine, fleshing table setup, yada yada yada and you can really sink into some money. If your serious about it, and know your going to stick with taxidermy, look on taxidermy.net for a used fleshing machine. That will be one of, if not your biggest purchase.

Most needed stuff: Stout ruffer, modeling tools, brass brushes, paint brushes, hide paste, expoxie sculpt, bondo, critter clay, and PATIENCE!

I'm far from experienced though, I've only done 10 whitetails. I agree with EvilX, for your first one start with a good prepped cape so you know what it takes to have a mount look nice. Let me know if you are interested in one of my extras. Tanned at Spartan Tannery in Solon.
