Looks like my season is over

The day after filling my tag last year I couldn't wait to do it all again this year.
Between reading online, reading magazines, running trail cameras & scounting I put literally hundreds of hours into this season.

I've logged quite a few hours in the stand the last week and I've noticed that my back was starting to get a little 'achy'. Yesterday when I was walking out I started feeling it a little more and by the time I was half way thru the afternoon at work it had officially seized up and now I'm out of commission.
As you can probably tell from my tone, I'm pretty demoralized. Not just becuase I'm laid up in the middle of the rut, but I've historically had a bad back and I've tried to do everything I can to keep it from getting hurt again. The last year I've been religious about doing perscribed excercises, I get up at 5:15 five times a week and walk on the treadmill and I've lost 25 pounds (I now weigh 165, so it's not like I was huge before). I was just telling my wife a few weeks ago that I felt better than I ever have in my adult life and I felt like I was 18 again.
Possibly the worst part of it is, I think that the combination of sitting all those hours in the stand and walking in & out in the dark on uneven ground is what led to this.

Even though I've had a few low points in the season (wounded a big one during early muzzy that thankfully lived and moved when I shouldn't have and got busted by a good one the other day) I am fortunate to have spent the time that I did in the stand & I've learned some things that I can take with me to seasons down the road.

Maybe I'll get it healed up enough before the orange army is unleashed that I can get out another time or two, but in the meantime, I'm going to have to live vicariously thru you guys so keep those harvest reports & pics coming!!!
Give 'em hell & be safe!

permit

In MN you can get a handicap permit, park your truck and hunt, maybe not as appealing, but it sure beats not hunting at all. Can you still drive a vehicle? Not sure what Iowa's rule on handicap permits is?

Hope you get better!

Sorry to hear about your back, keep on trying to heal it and get out there before December hits.

Thanks hardwood!

While I'm definitely hurtin', I'm not quite handicap. I can still manage what looks like an 85 year old man's walk and can function on a limited basis, but I'm definitely not good enough to climb in or sit in a stand, handicap permit or not. If I wanted to, I could drive the Gator into the field & sit in that, but at this point sitting still anywhere on anything for an extended period of time isn't very appealing and I don't think a mature buck is going to walk within range of me sitting in the Gator.

I'll get better, I always do, but it's usually a 1-2 week process and by then I'm afraid it's going to be time to hang it up for another year anyway.
Like I told the wife, at least I wasn't doing anything obviously stupid when I hurt it this time or fall out of my stand & hurt myself permanently.

I'll be OK...just a little angry at the situation, pouting & feeling a little sorry for myself for a bit when I made the OP! Hopefully I'll get another hunt or 2 in when I heal up, otherwise there's always next year!

You might try a comfy chair in a blind. This time of year you don't need to be in a tree to kill a nice buck. Just in the vicinity of does.

Try to keep your chin up, even though it's hard sometimes. Bad backs are not fun in the least. I've had back problems ever since I took a tumble out of my stand 10 years ago, hasn't been right since. It's easy to get down sometimes but try to stay positive. Best of luck to you in your recovery!

I feel sorry for you man. I haven't had back problems but I've had knee problems. Best thing to do is exactly what you are doing. Just relax at home. Yeah, you could go hunt in a ground blind but it isn't going to help your back that's for sure. As I'm sure you know!! Good luck. Take plenty of pain pills and dont mix it with :drink1:;)
