LOT tags

I've heard of some folks selling firewood or planting a couple apple trees and selling apples or even selling a couple hay bales from their property to get a landowners tag. Is this legit or shady? Or both :) I don't have a problem with it unless they do it and fill their LOT tag off their own property...just curious if this applies as ag operation/income

You don't need to sell or produce anything to get a landowner tag. I know people getting LOT's who only own timber that is in forest reserve so they don't have to pay taxes each year on the land.

LANDOWNER: I am a resident of Iowa and I own at least 2 contiguous acres of qualifying agricultural land. I do not use a third
party, such as a farm management company, to make annual farm operating decisions.
(If you checked Box 1, you MUST CHECK AT LEAST ONE box for a-e below).
a I am the farm operator on that farmland, or
b I make annual decisions about the farm operations that are carried out by renters, laborers, or custom applicators, or
c I raise specialty crops (orchards, nurseries, garden crops, trees, etc. on that land, or
d All or part of my land is enrolled in the conservation reserve program, or
e I rent my farm to my adult child who operates the farm.

LANDOWNER SPOUSE: I am the spouse of a landowner who qualifies

I thought they meant the same thing. I understand what the DNR references about eligibility for a lot tag...read it a couple times. Questioning folks who claim to fulfill the 'farm unit' piece with your non traditional farming operations. Like, "I have a firewood farm"

I missed droptines comment...is timber reserve food enough? As long as you have a parcel in your name, what is stopping you from saying I have a farm operation? Other than the section where you have to say that you swear its true or else subject to penalty :)

I know people that use to get land owner tags & live in town & not own any property,so unless they tightened up on it who knows.

How do things get so confusing on discussion boards like this when it is spelled out pretty clearly in the regs? A lot of people have heard of or knwo others that get land owner or tenant (LOT) tags that dont meet the requirements because they simply need to lie and there is little to no follow up to catch them. I'm not condoning any of it but it is not uncommon.

What is the "etc" on specialty crops and what is a "farm operation"?

Don't you have to go to the county courthouse to get a LOT? I know that's where my brother and dad always went and they needed documents that proved they qualified for the tag. I know I wouldn't have any of that info if trying to get a LOT and lying about it.

You can do it all online

They do audit the system I was called 3 years ago and told I was ineligible for a landowner tag. I politely told the woman on the phone she was incorrect,at at that time I owned 4 farms and was operator on about 12 others. We had a good talk and determined my name was spelled wrong in there records. We went through my scenario and determined which farms could be hunted on a lot license. To those that buy the license with out qualifying for it that is called poaching no different than shooting one at night with a rifle.
