Lovstuen buck officially scored!

I've been doing a lot of business from my outdoor offices this fall (tree stands). One of the most interesting calls occurred yesterday while I was in a favorite shingle oak trying to fill a doe tag. It was Doug Lovstuen calling to share the results of the scoring of 'the buck'. Doug said at least 5 official Boone and Crockett scorers worked on the buck for much of the afternoon and came up with a B&C score of 319 4/8.

I called long time friend, Dale Ream, an official B&C scorer from Missouri. Dale was one of the people who did the earlier, green score on the rack and was also one of the scorers yesterday.

Like many of us, Dale is an outdoors person who really appreciates whitetail deer. He said it was a "very unique experience and I felt honored to put a tape on the rack."

The buck, along with the top five heads in each of 38 categories will receive an invitation to be panel scored next spring. This is to verify earlier measurements and is part of standard B&C procedure.

Those heads, which usually number from 110-120, will be on display at the Kansas City Cabela's store from approximately May 1 through June 19.

I'd like to congratulate Tony Lovstuen on harvesting a tremendous buck which has turned out to be the highest scoring whitetail ever taken by a hunter in recorded history! It has been great getting to know him and his family and I wish them the best.

I just wonder what kind of impact this will have on nr deer hunters wanting to hunt our great state and really wonder what impact this will have on S.E Iowa and all the average hunter's who might loose out to leasing and the sale of ground? Anyway it's an Iowa treasure that all Iowa should be proud of.

I don't think it will have much impact on the laws or on land values either. Just my opinion but this buck was known to be running around that part of the state for several years before it was harvested and there was no impact to land values or laws because of it then. I don't think the fact that Tony harvested the buck will change things. Again...just my opinion.

Fishbonker,

It gets complicated. I talked with Dale. He said the largest currently listed in the B&C records, taken by a hunter, is the Fulton buck from Mississippi at 295 6/8. He doesn't know if the Beatty buck has been submitted yet or if it has been submitted, at what score.

Don't want to get anyones hopes up....but Dic k Idol was sure the "Hole In Horn Buck" was a new World Record. He was pretty disappointed when the panel began scoring it and knocked it down to number 2 spot by declaring it a basic 5X5 rack (I'd need to check on that for sure), thus reversing points as deductions. At the time it came in behind the "Illinois Road Kill Buck". Nothing is "Official" until the B&C panel says so....we'll see what happens.

Everyone needs to step back and take a deep breath over these numbers. Qualified measurers who have seen the rack in person have SERIOUS reservations about the scoring. It is a GREAT buck, a fantastic story, and much print ink is going to be expended. I hope for the Lovstuen family that they are able to deal with the whole situation on aa positive basis and in the end are not disappointed.

Key words... largest whitetail taken by a hunter.I always thought the "Hole in the horn" buck and the road kill from outside St. Louis were the largest ever scored but they were found ,not taken by a hunter..This is just from memory but I think the Beatty buck was around 304"so he beat it by about 15".Incredible

I've never been that big on scores. To me if it's a trophy, it's a trophy. On the other hand however, I have never shot anything even remotely close to the Lovstuen buck.

With that said I wish the Lovstuen clan the best with the scoring. It would be awesome to have the top whitetail of all time from Iowa. Either way I think it maybe the most talked about and famous buck in the world.....

Any specifics on it's age yet?? I was told the cape was not the actual one during the showing, but was "very similar". I thought the cape they used was a lot younger looking (not much nose grey) than what I'd expect to be the case for a 7-10 year animal. This prompted my question.

So when does the January issue of North American Whitetail come out? I didn't make it to Des Moines and I can't wait to see pictures.

I just subscribed to NAW(read paid) so I could get the January issue but I've already recieved a note saying my subscription is past due and I yet get an issue?

Now that buck was taken in Zone 5 right? So that means all you NR's should apply for that zone next season. Now remember Zone 5 (not 4).

Patrick start looking for it to hit the stands around 12-15-03. I got that from Doug Lovstuen, at Larry show

Hope he was a breeder, be nice to continue his gene pool....unfortunately research shows most huge racked game animals are not as sexually active.

Most age guesses are in the 7-10 year range. They are planning on sending in the teeth which should be interesting.

I've been told, as ironwood reported, that the January issue should hit the newsstands around December 15. The February issue will also have part of the story. A book is being written also. It will be a fun story to watch unravel.

I love the sense of humor on this site though I think I will refrain from commenting on my 'rack size' and any related impacts on my life.
